The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between intrinsic motivation and the counselor self-efficacy beliefs of therapist interns within community mental health agencies. This research may provide information to support community mental health agency leaders in developing relevant programs to improve both therapeutic services and organizational performance, and to decrease employee burnout. The sample in the present study consisted of 33 therapist interns who were employed at 16 community mental health agencies in Alameda County, California, providing therapeutic services to children and families. The present study utilized three different instruments to collect data pertinent to the research questions: a demographic questionnaire, the work preference inventory, and the counseling self-estimate inventory. The data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, Version 22.0. Findings of the current study confirmed that therapist interns expressed similar motivation and counselor self-efficacy perceptions as shown by prior populations in prior studies (Al-Darmaki, 2004; Pennington, 2005; Wood, 2010). Results indicate a statistically significant positive correlation between intrinsic motivation and counselor self-efficacy perceptions of therapist interns.
