Does your org chart resemble a torn cobweb with broken or overlapping lines? Or does it appear clearly, symmetrically with no need for explanation or clarification? Organizational restructuring seems to be a topic that’s continually discussed, re-jigged, re-assessed, and re-tweaked – often resulting in a jumbled mess. A good org chart should have a few key pieces that are foundational to organizational efficiency, effectiveness, accountability, etc. - The heaviest part of the organization should be at the bottom. This is where people are interacting directly with the product or the client. It’s where quality and attention to detail & structure are most critical. - It should be symmetrical. Not every box needs to be filled (that happens as the business grows), but the levels of authority and responsibility should be consistent across the organization. From this we see how people need to work together and the type of work they’re responsible for. - The people who report to the President are responsible for the key strategic activities within the business. The top line of an org chart needs to have the work equally distributed across it – if you take one department away or it fails, the business is at risk. It's like taking one leg off of a chair, the whole structure becomes unstable. Organizing the work is a key component of growing a business and its complexity grows as the business grows. What Choices Are You Making? While attending this week’s Florida Society of Association Executives annual conference, I had opportunity to learn from three excellent keynote speakers. Crystal Washington, CSP, CPAE whose topic was: Futureproof Yourself: Innovate and Thrive, U.S. Olympian Johnny Quinn spoke on Breaking Through Barriers: unleashing resilience, determination, and growth for unbounded success, and Jessica Stollings-Holder encouraged attendees to See Differences Differently: honor and include all perspectives to fuel success. Although different topics, each referenced the impact of making choices. We are faced with countless choices to make every day. They could be personal or business related. Some are simple and seemingly insignificant and others have significant consequences. Choices and the resulting action or non-action affect direction and subsequent results. What you do or don’t do, every decision is a choice. Every action taken or not taken is a choice. When you’re at that decision making intersection and there is a choice to be made which option will you choose and why? A question from Johnny Quinn about the choices we make, particularly resonated with me. “Are your actions consistent with the outcomes you have been hoping for?” Isn’t that a powerful focus point to keep in mind for choice making?
