You’re leading a team of volunteers. How can you keep them motivated and engaged?
Every person wants to be of help to another. It's a basic human drive. The problem is how do I so? “ I have so many, many other responsibilities and obligations and priorities and demands…” That's where we come in. At the the Center for Global Initiatives we open source humanitarian intervention, so it's easy to be of help: http://www.centerforglobalinitiatives.org/

How do you solicit feedback and testimonials from your donors?
Asking for a testimonial can be awkward for both parties, sort of like fishing for a complement. There are some entities that help get past this possibly uncomfortable ask. For example, we use https://greatnonprofits.org/ which has an annual campaign, and that acts as the reason for use to reach out to our donors, users, and partners. The feed back is always helpful, not just for leadership, but also to gain greater public visability. In fact, their website also provides an easy opportunity to make a donation, if so inclined.

Going Global: How Psychologists Can Meet a World of Need

Psychologists are increasingly applying their knowledge, skills, and values to big-picture issues such as sustainability, human rights, conflict resolution, global education, and religious and cultural understanding. However, education, training, and professional development often overlook “thinking and acting globally” as a vital component of the professional identities of psychologists.
With decades of international experience as scholars, educators, practitioners, policymakers, and consultants, contributors to this book describe exemplary programs, relevant trends, and dynamic possibilities for global engagement.
They focus specifically on nine key areas of expertise through which psychologists can make a difference: advocacy, assessment, consultation, intervention, leadership, policy, research, service, and teaching.
Chapters also highlight opportunities for international and interdisciplinary collaboration while empowering indigenous voices and psychologies.
I was honored to be invited to collaborate with my co-authors, Drs. Elaine D. Hanson, and Gwen V. Mitchell in writing the Chapter on Service: Towards a Global Psychology of Collaboration, Counterflow, and Capacity Building. -
The Promise of Patient Registries: Clinical quality improvement beyond benchmarks
Impact: Private Practice Section of the American Physical Therapy Association
As health care in the United States becomes increasingly patient-centric, hospitals, clinics, and other health care practices must strategically adjust their business models to focus on patient experience, and more specifically, patient outcomes. As health care in the United States becomes increasingly patient-centric, hospitals, clinics, and other health care practices must strategically adjust their business models to focus on patient experience, and more specifically, patient outcomes. More than ever, health care professionals must know what works for which patients and why. Evidence-based medicine and evidence-based practice are more important to clinicians than ever before. While an evidence-base is predicated on having a robust literature from which to base reviews and consensus guidelines, generally only studies with positive findings pass peer review muster. Thus, studies that should be helpful and guiding are often of little practical value. An approach that may address this concern is the increasing use of patient outcomes registries, which, when designed and applied suitably, can provide clinicians and other stakeholders with a real-world picture of treatments and their efficacy.

“Change the world.” It always struck me that saying that sounded a lot like grandiose hubris, or at best, a dauntingly overwhelming task. I have added some of my Linkedin Influencer blogs/essays that I hope may be inspirational, also. The format of this book is inspired by Brian Eno’s A Year With Swollen…
“Change the world.” It always struck me that saying that sounded a lot like grandiose hubris, or at best, a dauntingly overwhelming task. The utter impossibility of it seemed certain until I realized that it can mean helping one person at a time. That is a theme you’ll see throughout this book and our websites and our work. I have added some of my Linkedin Influencer blogs/essays that I hope may be inspirational, also. The format of this book is inspired by Brian Eno’s A Year With Swollen Appendices, not so much the diary aspect but rather the overwhelmingly large collection of information in the various appendices. Additionally, this book is an “analog” version, if you will, of the content and links found at the CenterForGlobalInitiatives.org website and the associated DropBox account. Open-Sourced Humanitarian Interventionism It’s long been my goal to make life easier for those working in humanitarian and volunteer endeavors, as well as those in need of help. Indeed, in one way or another, we all need help in one form or another. So, just about everything you find herein and on the Center’s website, is free of charge, and a lot you could also find for yourself. What I’ve tried to do is speed up the search, vet what has been found, and then curate the results, making them as readily and easily available as I know how to. This is my dream of open-sourcing humanitarian work.

The New Humanitarians: Inspiration, Innovations, and Blueprints for Visionaries, Volume 1, Changing Global Health Inequities

From Braille Without Borders and Unite for Sight, to Geekcorps and PeaceWorks, humanitarian groups are working worldwide largely in undeveloped countries to better the lives of the residents. Whether they are empowering people with schools for the blind, prosthetic limbs, the devices to understand and use technology, or the information to work for civil peace, the men and women of these agencies offer tremendous talent to their causes, great dedication and, sometimes, even risk their lives to complete their missions. Working in war or civil war zones, humanitarians with nonprofits, non-governmental agencies, and university-connected centers and foundations have been injured, kidnapped, or killed. Now terrorist events and war crimes are more and more often bringing these self-sacrificing workers into the national spotlight by media headlines. Their work is, doubtless, remarkable. And so too are the stories of how they developed - including the defining moments when their founders felt they could no longer stand by and do nothing. In this set of books, founders and top officials from humanitarian organizations established in the last 50 years spotlight how and why they began their organizations, what their greatest victories and challenges have been, and how they run the organizations, down to where they get their funding and how they spend it to grow the group and its efforts. Led by Chris E. Stout, named Humanitarian of the Year by the American Psychological Association, the contributors here come from across training disciplines including psychology, medicine, technology, science, politics, social work, and business.

However, it is not simply a critique, there are inspirational examples and actionable tools for the interested reader as well.
