Hypertension is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, but effective management is challenging. Our program leverages advanced technology for remote BP monitoring, ensuring timely interventions and personalized care plans. The Program: - A 3-month journey supported by physicians, pharmacists, nurses, medical assistants, and administrative staff from our Connected Care Center, along with Best Buy Health’s tech support. - Continuous at-home blood pressure monitoring - Real-time data analysis and feedback - Virtual consultations with healthcare clinicians - Personalized lifestyle and medication management plans This program empowers patients to take control of their health and enhances the patient-provider relationship through more frequent and meaningful interactions. Wellness Wednesday – Data Exchange RheoMed MSO is proud to be one of greater than 100 health care entities participating in the California Data Exchange Framework through LANES in Los Angeles County. We join medical groups, hospitals, clinics, health plans, MSO’s, health departments, mental health facilities, post-acute facilities, and social service organizations that want to coordinate and improve care by exchanging data for patient care in real time. However, not all health care entities participate in data exchange. Sometimes this is due to relatively challenging situations such as cost, personnel, expertise, priorities, etc. The state of CA has provided financial and technical support to help overcome some of these barriers. In other cases, companies, while publicly supportive of data exchange, choose not to participate due to reasons such as competitive advantage, “proprietary information”, or simply control. This behavior is inexcusable, if not scandalous, because it interferes with optimal patient care. Let’s commit as a medical community to work together to improve patient care. Anthony Chang, MD, MBA, MPH, MS, Chief Intelligence and Innovations Officer at CHOC Children's and Founder of AIMed, delivered an insightful keynote on the lessons he's learned from three decades of innovation in healthcare. Reflecting on his experience with six companies—one successful exit, three ongoing, and two that closed—Chang shared three key takeaways for aspiring innovators. First, he emphasized the critical importance of listening to potential customers, especially clinicians, early on. He noted that one of his biggest mistakes was falling in love with a technology and presenting it as indispensable before truly understanding user needs, particularly within AI. For Chang, startups need to focus less on talking and more on gathering feedback to ensure solutions meet real-world demands. Chang also discussed the role of timing in innovation, using the metaphor of a stopwatch to underline that even the most impressive technology can fail if introduced before the market is ready. He noted that timing is often more crucial than the team or available resources, as early adopters may not be prepared for a new product without sufficient education and a clear path to adoption. His final advice centered on resilience and strategic adaptation, or what he calls “pivoting with perseverance." He urged innovators to anticipate challenges and be ready to adjust as needed, treating the journey of innovation as a marathon rather than a sprint. This approach, Chang concluded, enables companies to navigate setbacks with agility while remaining aligned with market needs. Innovation and technology are traveling at warp speed in comparison to the care delivery infrastructure in which they are expected to deliver value. Multiple, overlapping disincentives to share patient information are deeply ingrained (e.g., competition, regulatory compliance, technical interoperability issues, and administrative burden). To wit, it's quite easy to overestimate ROI on HITECH investments. Making those investments are critically important, but they need to be analyzed and assessed in a realistic framework that discounts expectations according to infrastructure realities.

UC San Diego Health drives innovations that build the future of health care. As an academic health system, we quickly find practical applications for leading-edge technologies that can improve health outcomes for our patients. Leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) tools helps us to enhance patient safety and quality, while streamlining workflows to allow physicians to focus on what matters most—direct patient care. The results of a pilot study led by a team of UC San Diego School of Medicine researchers and published by the New England Journal of Medicine AI showed the potential of an AI system using large language models (LLMs) to make the reporting of hospital quality measures more efficient and reliable. Compared to a manual chart review, LLMs were found to make the reporting process faster and minimize human error. The technology could speed up quality improvements and reduce the time physicians spend on reporting tasks so they can spend more time practicing medicine. Mandatory bundles in surgery are a bi-partisan objective, and (in)ability to optimize cost/quality will dramatically impact hospital P&L. Regular insights from granular data , and AI-based decision support are the only way to systemically reduce unwanted variability and be both profitable and high quality.

"A one-year analysis of 21 Kaiser Permanente Northern California Oncology practices presented at the 2023 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting found that each of its oncologists respond to an average of 19 secure patient-physician portal messages per day, including weekends (Abstract 1503). The unseen value of these messages was estimated to be more than $11 million, including roughly $3.8 million in avoided out-of-pocket patent copayment costs and $7.7 million in missed billing. Major cancer centers are increasingly billing for some nonurgent patient portal messages, including Johns Hopkins Medicine, Michigan Medicine, Cleveland Clinic, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. In addressing the ethics of billing, Dr. Nazha said that health systems need to create an approach that, “1) is efficient and equitable, 2) ensures patients receive valuable and timely access to medical services, and 3) protects the well-being of healthcare providers.”" https://lnkd.in/eYgsKy_x

Sharing my thoughts on how UC Davis Health is working to decrease costs by reducing unwarranted variations in patient care. Leveraging artificial intelligence to provide accurate and meaningful data to illustrate patients’ problems to clinicians will be key. As I noted in this article below: “AI has the power to aggregate vast amounts of data and demonstrate the impact of different care pathways, informing nurses and physicians about the optimal way to deliver care for each patient. With AI providing constant surveillance of practice variations, maybe it won’t take many years for improved care algorithms to make their way into daily practice. This a great example -- of a thoughtful new approach --that leverages technology --and uses a team that was keen to learning from implementation issues that required multiple PDSA cycles to get it right (and probably still going through them). --we need to leverage technology and new models of care with an eye toward innovation that improves patient care that allows for more timely, effective, and less costly care. My next thought. While this has been very impactful at UCHealth and has been led by many dedicated, wise leaders such as CT Lin MD, FACP, FAMIA, @Amy Hassel, and Diana Breyer, could such an approach be done in the neonatal and pediatric ICU settings? My next thought, as #AI and #ML / #DL become more available in healthcare to assist us in pattern recognition, will our predictive and prescriptive approaches lead to a higher intelligence with improved care for all ICU patients (and those in other areas of the hospital or even the newer "hospital at home" approach). #UsingWhatWeHaveBetter https://lnkd.in/gedRjuaa

Abridge + Kaiser Permanente take the partnership plunge. In actively piloting various opportunities in the #AI-enabled scribe space, so far it’s obvious: • This solution has game-changed how I practice and my approach to outpatient clinic workflow. • I feel this solution impacts provider efficiency, decreases #PajamaTime spent after work, not with our family but rather buried in the EMR — thus giving us back what’s most important — our time. • I’d offer the biggest disruption is how this AI-enabled innovation allows me to be more human, increasing the doctor-patient connection and my ability to more directly engage eye-to-eye about my patient’s health. • With so much inertia in this particular space for AI Healthcare, I feel some applications/vendors have a product advantage, all need richer ability for bespoke customization, speciality-focused nuance, and added EMR application/back office integration. It will happen in time. 💥🎤⬇️: Combine this novel innovation with EMR voice-enabled orders and auto billing/charge capture capability - akin to the rotary dial on a telephone, one day we may no longer will need a keyboard to provide outpatient clinical care. "The preservation of individual autonomy and privacy is the essence of freedom." In the rapidly evolving world of healthcare, AI has emerged as a transformative force, promising to enhance patient outcomes, streamline processes, and democratize access to care. There’s still much work to be done before we truly get to that place – but as we embrace these technological advancements, we must also confront a critical underlying debate: the balance between autonomy and control. Isn’t that what it’s really about as we consider deployment of such tools? AI in healthcare offers remarkable potential for empowerment—enabling patients to receive personalized care, facilitating earlier and more accurate diagnoses, making it easier for them to get a clinical care while at the same time,  also providing healthcare professionals with cutting-edge tools to make informed decisions. If done properly, it’ss a shift that could democratize access to quality care, breaking down traditional barriers and expanding reach to underserved populations. However, this empowerment comes with a trade-off. The more AI integrates into healthcare, the more data it collects—raising significant concerns about privacy, consent, and control. Who owns this data? How do we ensure it’s used ethically, without infringing on the autonomy of individuals? The challenge lies in striking a balance. We must harness AI’s capabilities while safeguarding the fundamental rights of patients. We need to explicitly address who’s in control? This requires thoughtful discussion around regulation, ethics, and the preservation of personal autonomy as well as professional education. The future of AI in healthcare will depend on how well we manage this delicate balance.
