Thank you NBC 6 South Florida and Ryan Nelson for continuing to talk about the death of Bud the sea lion, and once again having me on to discuss the disturbing situation at Miami Seaquarium. The recent USDA inspection reports show the facility did not have the staff or facilities to care for Bud. It’s clear the veterinary staff was hoping the USDA would help them and confiscate these animals so they could get the care they needed. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and now Bud is dead. Word on the street is that new reports will be released very soon. Miami Seaquarium is still open, and they plan to stay open. We all need to join together and make sure the animals are protected. This facility should become a sanctuary, nature preserve, or research facility that could benefit the animals. Now, Daniella Levine Cava for County Mayor can take action and seize the animals before more die. I am particularly worried about Aries and Bimini, two dolphins who both have compromised health. It is interesting how so many animals have eye problems, kidney problems, and lung infections. This speaks to the contaminated water they are confined in. Therefore, this situation represents ongoing deprivation of sufficient shelter and sustenance in violation of Florida’s animal cruelty laws. Florida Statute 828.122 provides that when a court finds probable cause of abuse of any animal, the court shall order the confiscation of the animal. Under 828.073, any law enforcement officer or animal control officer can remove animals found neglected or cruelly treated or place them in protective custody at the Miami Seaquarium and compel The Dolphin Company to adequately care for the animals until they are relocated to better facilities. A female Doberman Pinscher was relinquished to the shelter and today was her day to be spayed! 🙌🐕❤ Did you know that Doberman Pinscher's are prone to a blood clotting disorder? Von Willebrand's disease (vWD) is the most common inherited bleeding disorder of both humans and dogs. It is caused by a deficiency in the amount of a specific protein needed to help platelets (the blood cells used in clotting) stick together and form clots to seal broken blood vessels. This is something we needed to screen for before performing surgery. This test is called the buccal mucosal bleeding time and is easy and quick to do. Normal clotting time is between 1-4 minutes, however, we like it to be under two minutes for our purposes. Prolonged bleeding with this test can raise the suspicion of the disease, in which case, we would not do surgery. After anesthesia is administered a small cut is made on the gums above the canine tooth. A timer is started and the blood is blotted continuously watching until the bleeding eventually stops. Once bleeding has ceased we record the time. Lucky for our girl her clotting time was just over one minute so she was cleared for surgery.
