How Restful Leadership came to be: Do you want to know the story of how I started doing what I do? Before I began helping social impact leaders and entrepreneurs—especially Black women & femme leaders and coaches—develop Restful Leadership practices, I was doing something quite different. I spent years working as a youth advocate, social worker, trauma-informed practitioner, public administrator and community leader. I was known around the world for award-winning program development, system change and research efforts to improve conditions for Black youth and non-Black youth of color. But while my career thrived, I was battling mental and physical health challenges from an endless cycle of anger, overwork, trauma, and burnout.  My family, my relationship, my body and my spirit suffered. 🗓 In 2016, I founded the Race and Gender Equity (RAGE) Project out of my frustration with the inequities facing Black women and youth. 🗓 In 2017 I graduated with my doctoral degree (not bad for a high school drop out and teen mum). 🗓 In 2018, I started my dream job as a tenure-track professor at Sacramento State - my alma mater.  I also began coaching and consulting through RAGE. I volunteered for EVERYTHING equity related.  I spent countless hours mentoring and coaching students. I was determined to make a difference!! 🗓 In 2020 the great racial awakening began 🙄 I pushed myself even harder to support anti-racism efforts. Those of us doing DEI work were BUSYYY.  I also found a more restful and mindful workflow. I prioritized my own wellbeing. Nonetheless, I was tired AF and the antiracism efforts were becoming more and more frustrating.  I struggled to sleep even though I was exhausted. Mental health was significantly declining in myself and EVERYONE around me. 🗓 In 2021 my best friend died.  I realized I couldn’t keep pushing myself like this. I knew I had to make a change, and that’s when Restful Leadership saved my life. There are a lot of reasons I decided to help others embrace Restful Leadership, but here are some of the biggest: ✅ After experiencing chronic burnout and loss, I had to reimagine work ✅ I finally admitted to myself that social justice-driven work is exhausting ✅ When I implemented restful practices in my personal and professional life, my life changed for the better. ✅ I realized all of my experiences could be used to change peoples’ lives, including my own.  And … I could make a living doing what I love - resting 😏 ✅ Now, I teach people how to embrace Restful Leadership through coaching, consulting, trainings, and retreats, helping them create healthier, more sustainable ways of working and make an even greater impact on the world! This past Friday I had the privilege of participating in an insightful discussion at the Talent Management Collective (www.TMCollective.community) on navigating post-election workplace tensions. With workplace incivility costing organizations over $2B daily in lost productivity (SHRM), having a clear strategy has never been more critical. Special thanks to Melanie Hughes, veteran CHRO, who outlined four crucial elements for leaders to consider: 1️⃣ Align with Company Mission - Understand how the changed political landscape affects your core business - Identify potential impacts on employee job security - Prepare clear messaging to reduce uncertainty 2️⃣ Values vs. Politics - Distinguish between political issues and values-based positions - Focus on reinforcing organizational values - Maintain consistency in communication approach 3️⃣ HR Leadership Role - Priority: Maximize talent effectiveness - Consider impact of political discourse on team dynamics - Watch for subtle exclusion patterns that could affect performance - Foster an environment where all talent can thrive 4️⃣ Policy Implications - Stay ahead of regulatory changes - Prepare for impact on talent mobility - Develop clear communication strategies for affected employees and leaders Key takeaway: Successfully navigating the minefields that litter today's workplace requires sophisticated systems thinking that considers complex social dynamics, business realities, and global disruption. The group highlighted valuable frameworks from Jonathan Haidt's Moral Foundation Theory and Harvard Professor David Moss's work on democracy. The consensus? Leading through these times will be extremely challenging and will benefit from maximum curiosity, non-judgmental thinking, and listening to learn—not to win. Thoughts? I provide strategies and tips for how to do this. Diversity and compassion fatigue are real, especially during these interesting times. (Part 1/2) Here at GiANT, we are in the midst of a major global focus to intentionally impact leadership culture through the The 5 Voices Certification. For today, I want to give you an inside look at the details on how we, at GiANT, are leveraging world-class content and communities to change the world. Moving Back Into The Role of CEO For the past 4 years, I’ve been the executive chairman and co-founder of GiANT Worldwide, serving Bronson Taylor who has been doing an excellent job as CEO of GiANT. After a company retreat earlier this year and a number of conversations with VC’s and strategic advisors, we decided to separate our company into two; A) GiANT as a certification house primarily focused on the 5 Voices Certification and B) the 5 Voices App as its own business to consumer app business. Leaders define culture and provide the strategic direction needed to grow these initiatives. I am so grateful for Bronson, Lucas, Justin, Connelly, Landon and Anne as they create a killer 5 Voices app (www.5voices.com). As for GiANT, I am grateful to have a talented team of leaders helping to make the 5 Voices Certification truly world-class. I’m passionate about our new initiative, launching the 5 Voices Certification, and working with our community of over one thousand people to get 100,000 people certified. Why The Focus on The 5 Voices? If you aren’t familiar with the 5 Voices, it’s a leadership and communication framework that categorizes the many different styles into five distinct "Voices.” Each Voice represents a specific set of traits, strengths, and communication preferences. The framework is designed to help individuals and teams understand themselves and others better, improving collaboration, reducing conflicts, and enhancing overall team performance. Since Steve Cockram and I wrote the 5 Voices book, hundreds of thousands of people have taken the 5 Voices assessment through trainings, our online platform and now the 5 Voices app. The 5 Voices is one part personality assessment, one part communication system and one part relational intelligence tool. Happy Monday, everyone. A recent coaching session was a powerful reminder that the invisible scars we carry from past experiences can often be the biggest obstacles to our success. A talented and experienced Black woman in the planning industry, let's call her "A," was grappling with assertiveness and self-doubt. The toxic environment of her previous workplace had left her hesitant to speak up and advocate for herself. She was playing small, focusing on the details instead of pursuing her leadership aspirations. During our session, we explored the impact of trauma on her career and uncovered the limiting beliefs that were holding her back. Clearly, "A" had the skills and knowledge to excel, but she needed to reclaim her power and step into her full potential. We discussed the importance of shifting her mindset, embracing her strengths, and developing her leadership style. I encouraged her to pursue opportunities for growth, advocate for herself, and visualise the successful leader she was destined to become. By the end of our conversation, "A" was energised and ready to take action. She recognised the need to let go of the past and embrace the possibilities ahead. She understood that her voice mattered and had the power to create the desired career. Stories like "A"'s inspire me to continue my work as a trauma-informed leadership coach. I'm passionate about empowering Black women to heal, reclaim their power, and thrive in their careers. Black & brown women in leadership, let's talk about mentorship and sponsorship. Understanding the distinction between these two roles is crucial to your career advancement. As a Black woman in corporate America, I experienced firsthand the power of sponsorship. While mentorship offers valuable guidance, sponsorship is the strategic advocacy that can truly propel your career. Early in my career, I experienced rapid success,  leading international teams and strategic programs. I knew it was because I was competent, confident, and consistently delivered results. However, I also had a network of executive sponsors who used their influence to advocate for my advancement. It wasn’t until I hit a career plateau many years later that I fully realized the power of sponsorship and the key distinction between it and mentorship. When I found myself stalled in my career, I did what many of the women and leaders from minoritized groups that I coach do – I engaged mentors across the organization, seeking advice to figure out what I was doing wrong. The “aha!” moment came when I realized that I wasn’t doing any one thing wrong, it was that I had no one in positions of power aware of what I was doing right. I had plenty of executives more than willing to meet “with me” to talk “TO” me (mentors), but no one was actively meeting “with others “to talk ABOUT me (sponsors). That was the difference maker. My mentors offered valuable guidance, but I realized I needed a sponsor who would use their influence to open doors and create opportunities. When I finally found one during that period in my career, forward momentum returned. If you're a Black woman or leader of color striving for career progression, here's the key takeaway: Don't just seek mentors who will share their wisdom with you; actively cultivate sponsors who will use their power to advocate for you.
