For employers looking to keep health insurance costs in check, the type of network they choose impacts the overall cost of their coverage. Focused networks, also known as narrow networks, can help lower your group health plan premiums and out-of-pocket costs. Sanford Health Plan offers two focused network plans for employers, known as Sanford TRUE plans. The plans are HSA-eligible, so they can be used in conjunction with a health savings account, allowing your employees to save money on a pre-tax or tax-deductible basis to pay for future medical expenses.

This story is from Illinois. They are trying to remove Step Therapy which is a common complaint of consumers. In simple terms Illinois new law means the insurance company can't force you to try less expensive options before covering treatment your Dr. thinks you should do. I can argue both sides. On the one hand if your trusted Dr. is saying you need to do treatment A then that seems reasonable. On the other hand when the insurance company says treatments B, C, and D show equal effectiveness at a lower total cost... that helps keep premiums down for everyone. Bottom-line is I imagine a lot of states are going to watch and see what happens in Illinois over the next few years. If this law does not cause the cost of medical care and the cost of medical insurance to rise dramatically other states may follow. I don't just sell Employee Benefits, I teach Employee Benefits. I tell my students the great part about our industry is legislation causes it to constantly change. New agents that stay current can compete with tenured agents that don't service "smaller accounts". Thakn you Chris deacon for pointing out the importance of understanding the true motivations behind many healthcare systems' interest in "improving care". As Chris states, "It's crucial to recognize that these "opportunities" may be less about patient outcomes and more about maximizing revenue through increased patient engagements." She references one hospital system CFO's recent comment, "As we look at the future landscape, the competition for customers will take this industry to another level. We're investing now to be ready to compete." Notice that he did not use the term patient, but rather customer. At least to me, this would seem to indicate more concern for a person's "business" versus their care. The top concern being how do they attract and retain the "customer's" business to maximize the financial opportunity. Instead of how do we deilver high-quality care at a reasonable price. Chris concludes quite accurately that, "This perspective counsels against any optimism that patients as people, rather than patients as profit, are at the center of this strategy."
