To remedy this, I compiled a list of statements that summarized my philosophy of leadership, and enabled my Marines to quickly get grasp my expectations of them on certain topics. I used this “cheat sheet” when speaking to my units, or when an incoming Marine met with me for the traditional “Welcome Aboard” meeting. At some point, some of the leaders within my units, enlisted and officer alike, began to ask me for copies of this document so they could better emphasize my leadership philosophy and intent to their Marines. Over time, I put the title of “Ettore’s Rules” on the document and, as the years passed, the list grew longer and I occasionally reworded and reprioritized some of the content. I always made sure that my Marines knew that while many of the statements on this list were my own words, the philosophies and concepts supporting them were not my own original thoughts, for two reasons: - To be fully honest and transparent with my men. - To reinforce the practice of Marine leaders utilizing time-tested knowledge, tactics, and techniques rather than wasting time trying to “reinvent the wheel,” especially during situations in which time is a scarce commodity. I urge you to read “Ettore’s Rules.” After doing so, ask yourself if you were able to quickly understand my views on leadership and what I expected of Marines in my units? You'll notice these rules were written in a completely male-oriented manner. I was never in command of an operational unit that had females assigned to it (women were not assigned to infantry units during my era); thus, I was addressing only male Marines during the vast majority of my service. The rules also contain some aggressive statements that imply violence, and what some may deem to be a “Hard-Ass” approach to leadership. The Marine Corps exists solely to fight and win in combat, and I was leading and training Marines who were expected to...and in some instances, did...kill enemy combatants who were trying their best to do the same to them. The graphic shows “Ettore’s Rules” in their final form upon my retirement from the Marine Corps in 1998. All Military Veterans, VA Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs)   DBQs help collect necessary medical information to process your VA disability claims. You can use these VA forms to submit medical evidence from your health care providers to the VA when filling your VA claim. This information helps to support your claims for VA disability benefits. In most instances, you're entitled to a no cost disability examination by the VA. In some instances, the VA may determine an additional disability examination is required to complete the claim. If an exam is scheduled, you must report for the examination (C&P). DBQ's are medical examination forms used to obtain important information for evaluating disability compensation and/or pension claims.  VA physicians use DBQs when performing C&P exams for VA disability. The purpose of a DBQ is to ensure that the physician performing the exam records all the information needed for VA to properly rate a disabled veteran’s conditions. Before you go to a VA C&P (Compensation and Pension) exam you need to print down the Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs) for your medical condition before you see any Doctor performing C&P exam. Find your medical condition using link and answer all the question either by you or your doctor before your appointment. Carry in your completed DBQ with you to your exam and give it to the examiner. This is important for you to carry with you to your appointment! Also, Have dates and brief medical synopsis of relevant medical service record entries. HairStory: The USAF Tactical Cap Dear Base Commanders, As some of you implement local polices to restrict wear of the United States Air Force-approved Tactical Caps, let me help you. It’s me. Hi. I’m the problem. It’s me. The Base Commander who persisted for years to get the Tactical Cap approved for wear. Why? Simple. One size does NOT fit all. Many of you have the luxury of bi-weekly “3 on the top, 1 on the sides” touchups or the clean shave, so one hat works. For people with thick, wavy hair that grows like a chia-pet with just a hint of humidity, a cap with a mesh back and an adjustable band prevents from having multiple hats throughout the day. It also alleviates the multiple product reapplications throughout the day to keep hair tight that causes headaches, hair loss, and a growing forehead. I get it, you may not have that challenge. That is why I combed out my hair into all of her full afro glory for our smooth-headed United States Air Force (USAF) senior leaders to demonstrate how much I shift and shape myself daily to serve. Seeing is believing - see your Airmen locally for yourself. Our USAF Leaders approved it at CORONA. I am listening to understand why you don’t. For those that deny Defenders the Tactical Cap, I encourage you to stand watch at the gate at the height of hot/humid/wet weather in a wool beret with a leatherish band and no bill . . . can you rise to your best? Safety outweighs heritage. We need the best of America’s talent to serve in our formations if democracy is going to win, to include the thick, wavy-haired talent. Maybe that is why there were only 3 Afro-abled women out of nearly 300 base commanders that stayed to serve at that level while I was in base command and still none at the CORONA decision-making table. To improve the less than 20% of women in military service, let’s work together to remove barriers like the hat so all qualified Americans with the propensity have #TheFreedomToServe! #tactics #choreography #precision #upeepz #paf #strike #mission #perfection Philippine Air Force (PAF) in the 2024 Australian PITCH BLACK Air Exercise The PAF is ramping up training as they prepare to acquire 20 or more multi-role fighter jets (Reuters, 20 July 2024 article by Kristy Needham). Little is known about the PAF tactics, techniques and procedures (TTP). I am still waiting for more info (visuals and reviews from other participants) about their art of executing strike missions. One thing known about Filipinos is they strive for perfection to execute precision and synchronicity. The PAF brought four Korean-built FA-50 to the 2024 PITCH BLACK exercise. Can you imagine augmenting their force with a combination of F-15EX (with jammers) and the F-35 (stealth)? They would come up with a TTP that is well coordinated with precision and synchronicity. If you liken choreography with tactical superiority, just look at the UPeepz performance at Body Rock Asia 2023. You will get an idea how the PAF will plan and execute their strike packages with the FA-50 fighters. *Choreography is applicable to the formation of tactics by understanding the hostile forces capabilities (ISR and weapons employment) to find their vulnerabilities and evaluate ones strengths and weaknesses. By doing so, one can "choreograph" the application of one's strengths to exploit the opposition vulnerabilities. And tailor the TTP to minimize exposure of ones weaknesses. The Philippines don't have the same resources of a major power to build a "gorilla package" to strike targets the way the U.S. Air Force can. [See Package Q Strike (Desert Storm) under Comments section]. Big question: How will the allied forces integrate the strengths and tactics of the PAF in combined air forces operations? And how do you prevent "friendly fire" when your allies have no or a different "identification friend or foe?" Something to think about in future combined air exercises.

It is time to release your grip on the definition of a smooth and successful military transition. The best thing I did for my sanity was wrote my own definition of a smooth and successful #militarytransition. If you do nothing else before this year ends, do this: ⬇️ Define YOUR definition of a successful & smooth transition. I started transitioning from the military before I applied for retirement. In 2013, I fell hard in my career and that led to a low place personally. When I was able to pick myself up, I did 3 things: 1. I defined my overall definition of success and purpose in life. 2. I got a life. I started getting some hobbies and fulfilling my purpose outside of the uniform. 3. I created a support system outside of my military family. The above helped me immensely when the time came to prepare for retiring from the military in 2020. On August 14, 2019, I wrote the following in my journal: A smooth transition from the military to the civilian sector means that I can pay my bills/have money for the extra medical/car taxes/expenses I'm not used to financing and feel 80% positive overall at work. That's it! That is my definition. It has nothing to do with the type of job, the salary, etc. It allows for the shit storms…the times when you feel so overwhelmed with the amount of differences there are in the civilian sector. It allows for the dark times when people say you are too much, too direct, too military, too emotional….and you start doubting every morsel of your personality. It allows for the hesitations you’ll experience towards anything uncomfortable and unfamiliar. Release your grip on what you think smooth and successful looks and feels like. Draft your own definition and get up every day to fight like hell to create it! You got this! Plus, this community is here for you to help you fight your next battle on a more complex (and sometimes more dangerous) battle ground. ❤️

At almost 50 years old, I found myself reporting for military peacekeeping duties. And I realized I didn't even know how to put on my uniform… Or holster my handgun properly! After 22 years out of service, my military knowledge was outdated, and my subordinates initially knew more than I did. Leading by expertise was not an option, so I had to lead by building strong relationships. I intuitively started practicing the cornerstones of Humble Leadership. I focused on building collaborative relationships with my team and across the entire peacekeeping force, investing heavily in social capital. I regularly sat down with each team member, with no agenda other than to learn more about them as individuals. These one-on-ones were crucial for building trust and ensuring we could rely on each other when challenges arose. When we deployed to Kosovo at the end of March 2017, we were short two key team members. My deputy commander and our Warrant Officer joined us at the last minute. These roles were mission-critical, and I had to establish trust and open communication quickly. I took them out for lunch to learn about their families, professional experiences, hobbies, passions, and expectations for our mission. This genuine interest helped us bond and build a strong foundation of trust. Throughout our mission, I maintained regular one-on-one meetings to check on their well-being and invite feedback on my performance as their leader. This approach enabled me to delegate effectively and empower my team. For instance, I tasked my deputy commander with leading a critical briefing to high-level peacekeeping force members while I was absent. Thanks to our collaborative relationship, she felt empowered to take on this crucial task and executed it exceptionally well. My leadership during the nine-month peacekeeping mission was far from perfect, and I made plenty of mistakes. However, my team proved to be highly adaptable, had a clear, shared purpose, and felt empowered to make front-line decisions. As a result, we fulfilled our mission to the fullest satisfaction of our commanders. At the end of our intense nine months together, several team members looked me in the eye and said: “With you, Captain—anytime again.” That is something I am incredibly proud of and attribute to the strong, collaborative relationships we built. Leading with Radical Humility doesn’t mean we can’t talk about our achievements. It means building a foundation of trust and collaboration that enables everyone to succeed. The irony of me bragging about my own humility isn’t lost on me. But I believe it’s important to share the power of leading with humility and the incredible results it can achieve.
