Critical thinking skills were fully engaged at today's Twin Cities Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Roundtable. Thank you, Stephen Bleschloss, for so eloquently capturing the urgency of this moment. As we prepare for what may be an intense period of governance and resistance, the responses from leaders in states like California, Illinois, and New York remind us of the critical need for state and local actions to protect our democracy and fundamental rights. Governor Gavin Newsom’s call for a special legislative session exemplifies the kind of proactive stance that must inspire other states, including places like New Mexico, where federal funding is a lifeline, to reinforce safety nets and safeguard the vulnerable. The reality we face today is a painful echo of longstanding truths. Our nation’s systems were historically structured on exploitation and designed to perpetuate inequity, harming communities and degrading our shared environment. This election has only highlighted the urgency for a renewed commitment to justice and equality, especially as we navigate a time of existential and moral crises, from climate change to eroding rights. Yet, amid these challenges, we are called not only to defend but to transform our communities into places of equity, resilience, and strength. Each of us has a role to play. Volunteer work, coalition-building, neighborhood support initiatives—these are all essential steps toward countering the destructive forces that seek to divide us. As Timothy Snyder wisely said, “They want you to be alone.” Our power lies in our unity, in supporting each other, and in fostering a culture of collective action. In New Mexico, this means not only protecting our safety nets but holding leaders accountable to prevent any rollback on essential services, healthcare, and environmental protections. Being a “joyful warrior” doesn’t mean ignoring the anger or grief we feel—it means channeling it into constructive, sustainable action. Our values of love, resilience, and justice can carry us forward, even in challenging times. Now is the time to rise, to be bold, and to shape a future rooted in dignity, unity, and unwavering commitment to justice. How TO: talk about the importance of skills-first hiring. New research from the Topos Partnership team!

 We often place a high premium on knowing the right answer, or even just looking like you know the right answer. But it’s just as important to have someone who (1) acknowledges when the right answer isn’t obvious and (2) is good at working with you to find it. I recently contributed thoughts to a collaborative article on how to respond when you’re unsure about a case interview question (i.e. hypothetical question). I’m sharing a slightly expanded version of my suggestions because I think some can be helpful in a variety of situations (e.g. policy analysis, consulting, organizational change, team/community building). I hope they’re useful & prompt thoughts about what works for you. 1) Seek clarification if you aren’t sure about what’s being asked. The points you might lose for not immediately grasping a concept can be made up by providing a good answer once you’ve gotten clarification, plus by the candor you show in asking the question. 2) The goal in most interviews is to get the job. So consider: (1) What competencies are the organization seeking? (2) What competencies do I bring? and (3) Given 1 and 2, what do I want my answer to highlight about me? A good selection process is more focused on what the answer says about the candidate, than it is about the specifics of his/her answer. 3) Focus on finding the problem/opportunity in the scenario – Providing a logical, complex explanation about how to solve a SYMPTOM is less impressive than discerning the underlying PROBLEM. For example, you’re asked about what training program is best for a given situation. You might say “I can suggest a training approach, but I’d first want to confirm that training is the best or only solution to the problem. It’s clear that people are not performing up to the needed standard, and this might be due to insufficient training. But it might also be caused by factors like bad work processes, an ineffective hiring system, org. culture issues that negatively impact motivation, etc.” 4) Identify the criteria that a satisfactory solution must meet. - “I think that given the situation; we’d want to make sure any potential solution is effective, affordable, timely, acceptable to key stakeholders, etc.” This shows awareness of what matters and provides a landscape for you to speak to the appropriateness of your recommendation. It also gives you leverage to ask clarifying questions. 5) Identify important information that is shared in or missing from the scenario. This helps build ideas like: “Given that we know A, I think this conclusion/course of action would be appropriate” OR “Given that we don’t know B, I think a key step is finding out this information, and this is the approach I would use.” In sum, we know more, interpret better, and communicate more effectively if we acknowledge and act upon the need to better understand. Following with great interest and hope to be there! In all the HE institutions I've worked with or been connected to, "strategy" has always foundered on implementation because of misaligned faculty and staff experience (misaligned with the strategic asks, that is). These days, in other contexts, there is more talk about #emotionalcompensation as a way to accurately assess and remedy workplace experience(s). Not surprisingly to me, the building blocks of emotional compensation are the same as the building blocks for cohesive teams (teams that can figure out how to implement in spite of adversity). Looking forward to hearing many perspectives at this webinar. Who can join me?
