The Information just broke the news of the incredible $8B+ #fundraising haul, with General Catalyst nearly doubling its last total. Fund breakdowns include $4.5B for "core venture funds," $1.5B for their "core creation team," and $2B for "multiple accounts." This was a 33% oversubscription to their $6B fundraising target, which surfaced in April 2024 by the Financial Times. While this is great news for the #entrepreneurial founders, the key question /challenge for General Catalyst will be where to place the newly closed funds to deliver the returns expected by their #limitedpartners that entrust them with their hard-earned capital. Really appreciate the perspective from Anissa G.'s piece in The Information this morning based on her conversation with Bill Braun, Chief Information Officer at Chevron. Like other enterprises, Chevron has pursued two core areas that I believe are low-hanging fruit for AI adoption — they’ve built an internal chatbot with OpenAI’s API to help their HR and legal teams more easily query Chevron-specific company information and are testing out Copilot for Microsoft Office. What’s fascinating is Chevron, 15 on the 2024 Fortune 500 list, established an Enterprise AI team last summer to see what tools in the market they should be adopting, but haven’t yet found anything they believe will have a significant impact on the business — whether by boosting revenue or saving time and money. It’s easy to forget but helpful to keep in mind that, like many of their peers, Chevron began their cloud journey in 2017 and is still in the process of moving workloads there. While I believe it’s absolutely the right thing for management teams, boards and technology leaders to be actively seeking answers to the question of how they should leverage AI, there’s still a lack of clarity on where the rubber will meet the road to deliver transformative business outcomes. In many cases, continued cloud adoption is both a more immediate priority and a necessary intermediate step to being opportunistic with AI. I love stories like Samuel's about how he switched on to the need for the transition and found his pathway to having impact. Each of us has to find their own light switch and their own pathway. Prof Smil is such a troubling figure. Brilliant, charming, persuasive - yet he has used his skills to discourage us from working on what we all understand is a vast and daunting problem. All light switch, no pathway. For decades he propagated the Primary Energy Fallacy - the idea that renewable energy had to replace all "Primary Energy Demand", even though that is not a measure of demand at all: 2/3 of it is lost en route, mainly waste heat from burning coal, oil and gas. We need to provide energy services, we do not need to burn things. And he hasn't devoted 1% of his brilliance to explaining what we *should* do, rather than what we *shouldn't* do. OK, we get it, it's hard to change big systems fast. So where's the Smil plan? Even if we can't stop climate change dead in its tracks, we have to do the best we can. Every 0.1C matters. My light switch was seeing the damage being done to my beloved high mountain environments - glaciers disappearing, historic climbing routes becoming unusable because of rockfall as the permafrost melts. And my pathway was to help people understand in practice solutions - and not just renewables - that *could*, at least in theory, scale fast enough to make a difference. We now have enough manufacturing capacity to replace 5% of global electricity with solar every year. Soon to be 10%. If you put one grain of rice on the first square of the chess board, and two grains on the second square, you may not yet have enough to feed a Prof Smil, but we all know what happens next. 🧬 This week's Austin Bio + Health Roundup highlights significant data trends, my stance on covering funding announcements, new partnerships, and action across the Texas Bio Triangle. 🧬 💰 Funding: The Way I Plan to Cover Funding Announcements You may have seen reports of a local Bio & Health startup’s funding round through an SEC report filing. While some outlets have covered this, my position is not to. I prefer to support our builders directly rather than trolling the filings for scoops. There is plenty of real investigative journalism that our city would be well served by if that is where they focused. Remember I am not a journalist and I am not the media. When the company is ready to announce their round officially, I’ll gladly shout it to the rooftops. 📊 Data Peter Walker at Carta reports that in 2017, Biopharma and Medical Devices captured just under 10% of all VC dollars. By 2023, this figure rose to 17.7%, and in Q1 2024, it reached 24%. The overarching tailwinds favor our sector and region with trends towards Bio & Health and the physical & digital intersection. Energy and hardware, two other sector blossoming in Central Texas, also saw similar share gains. 🤝 M&A and Partnerships Sensi.AI, a 24/7 senior care intelligence agent, is partnering with Caring Senior Service to deploy SensiAI’s platform in Caring’s 50 locations across the US. I enjoyed going on Nick Telson-Sillett’s podcast, Pitch Deck by Forward Pursuit. Nick is a serial founder and investor (founded and exited DesignMyNight) so knows both sides of the table which always makes for an enriching chat. Some things we discussed: - The perceived power dynamic between VCs and founders can hinder productive conversations. - A compelling product demo can significantly influence investor interest. - Founders must focus on solving real customer problems to succeed. - Hiring standards are crucial for building a successful startup team. - Behavioural roadblocks can prevent the adoption of new solutions. - Validation from potential customers is key for pre-revenue startups. - The early-stage funding landscape has become more efficient and selective. - Pace of execution is a critical factor in attracting investment.

2H24 VC: Slow and Furious Race… We are racing to the election and then will likely crawl to a decision. The nasty rhetoric likely contributed to the slight down tick in consumer sentiment last month, the first time since the beginning of the summer. Headline inflation came in a touch hotter than expected at 2.4% in September. The paradox is that the Conference Board just increased its 3Q24 real GDP growth to 1.8%, up from 0.8% in its prior forecast. Conditions are quite good, but the world feels very chaotic. Obviously, the macro-economic conditions directly affect the venture capital industry as liquidity informs returns and the pace of new investments. The velocity of capital is critical and now the system feels stuck. According to a recent report from Pitchbook, both the number of investments and amount of capital invested significantly declined in 3Q24.  For the quarter, $37.5 billion was invested in 2,794 deals as compared to $55.5 billion in 3,661 deals and $35.0 billion in 3,365 deals in 2Q24 and 3Q23, respectively. Notwithstanding the obvious demand for innovative solutions, the healthcare technology sector also saw continued softness in investment activity. According to Rock Health, 3Q24 investment was $2.4 billion across 110 deals suggesting an annual pace between $10 - $11 billion, consistent with 2023. The data do not lie. Great analysis of recent #vc trends. Thank you Kaela Roeder and Technical.ly for including my thoughts in the piece. My "expanded" two cents below for anyone curious... It is easy to get excited by what is happening in venture capital these days given the advent of AI. However, for early-stage startups, the numbers tell a more nuanced story. Early-stage deal volume in Q4-2023 was down 66% from the peak (Q4-2021) and a quarter of the deals were down rounds. In 2024, volumes stayed fairly flat relative to 2023 levels (signalizing a normalization to pre-pandemic VC activity) and 32% of deals were down rounds in Q1 (a worsening since year end). Early-stage valuations have spiked back up this year – a pleasant boon for some founders. But, this inflation is largely driven by the excitement around AI and strong demand for capital-efficient, high-growth companies. Many startups have tried to become “dot AI” businesses overnight; however, such tactics are not the “silver bullet” to fundraising challenges and growth. With limited time and capital, funds are on the hunt for companies with bulletproof fundamentals or those with exponential growth potential. If you don’t check one of these two boxes, the VC world looks fundamentally different for you. Locally, there are some positive tailwinds. The D.C. area has outpaced other metro areas in adding AI jobs due in large part to the defense industry and an increasing number of tech companies opening-up federal outposts. Over the long-term, this will be very positive for D.C. startup growth and talent.
