I will never grow tired of expressing the importance of giving yourself permission to Just Start & Get Visible. I’m officially wrapping up a week of a media blitz talking all about etiquette and leadership on behalf of Detroit Regional Dollars for Scholars and the important work that they do! All of this is possible purely from making one decision to START a business called Scarlet that had an origin focus of teaching etiquette to teen girls in the city of Detroit. Now, more than a decade later with partnerships across multiple industries and a refined focus of helping leaders become better leaders, I’m reminded of what’s possible when you stop waiting and wishing and start taking action! So, here I am again - reminding you to Just Start the things you want to do. … and to be clear… I’m talking to you if you are a corporate employee and you want to start getting more invisible at your job so you can take advantage of career elevation opportunities. Last Sunday, I went to my local church as I often do, worshipped the Lord, and listened to a wonderful message from my pastor. As Pastor Jason—who always speaks with such an inspiring level of authenticity—kept sharing, I found myself thinking, I needed to hear this today. It was one of those messages that really makes you pause and reflect. . The message was from 1 John 5:16-21, and as I listened, I began to realize how easily I can let certain "idols" take center stage in my life. These idols aren't always the obvious ones—they can be things like my admiration for a particular leader, my job, or even the dream job I haven’t yet attained. My love for my country and community, or my desire for more resources, can also quietly become idols in my life. . Yet, as the scripture reminds us, as children in the presence of our Heavenly Father, we must keep ourselves away from idols—anything that takes His place in our hearts. . The more I reflected on this, the more I felt the Spirit asking me, Gilbert, what do you do with good things? And deep in my heart, the answer was clear: I try to share all the good things I hear. . So today, I want to share this message with you. I hope it challenges and encourages your spirit just as much as it did mine. . As you reflect, ask yourself: What idols might I be relying on today? . For example, · Through morning prayers and expressions of gratitude. · By reflecting on God's love and faithfulness before bed. · Through songs of praise and worship during the day. · By sharing stories of God's faithfulness with others. · Through moments of silent gratitude and meditation. · By expressing thanks for specific blessings in your life. Action Step: Start and end your day with a prayer of gratitude, declaring God's love and faithfulness in your life. Thoughtful article by Chicago's Alderman Desmon Yancy a few days ago articulating the growing frustration of Black Chicago residents. This sentiment is also reflected nationwide as Black America is trying to grapple with the challenges that are plaguing our communities. With public safety, health, and housing challenges, our communities are seemingly confused with how resources are allocated and not feeling relevant only during election years. It is hard to believe that in 2024, Black Chicago is facing enormous challenges with food and healthcare deserts, chronic affordable housing shortages, and public health issues where your zip code determines your life expectancy. This is why I advocate for Black political leaders to develop a "Go To 2020 for Black Chicago". We know all of this cannot rest on a new Mayor and fresh City Council. However, I believe making strategic investments in addressing these chronic issues with visible and tangible projects and resources that Black Chicago will immediately feel and recognize. These immediate and consistent investments in housing, reversing the blight on commercial corridors, and reducing food and pharmacy deserts will give the results and impact that Black Chicago residents will support.
