Deferred Deterrence Costs Compounded A too weak naval shipbuilding sector reliant on a too thin supplier base and very limited choices for builder has its costs. View this story thru that lens… Deferred building of submarines over a decade ago, over work of a too small fleet has got the submarine fleet in a situation it needs boats faster than can be built. On the nuclear deterrence front, the next ballistic missile submarines were on a razors edge for delivery before capacity to deter dropped. That future now seems inevitable as China rapidly builds up its nuke arsenal tripling its ICBM inventory and progressing its own growing ballistic missile submarine program. I am LONG Red Cat Holdings (RCAT) as an event-driven trade. RCAT is a finalist (out of originally 37 vendors) for a nearly $500M U.S. Army drone contract that is currently multiples the size of its market cap. There’s plenty to be optimistic about on the company from a standalone basis but their probability of dethroning the current incumbent for this contract is favorable. I believe that should they win, the upside could be nearly +200% from today's prices. Kirtland Air Force Base, home to over 100 mission partners, continues to be a pivotal defense hub in Albuquerque. Its collaborations extend beyond military operations, encompassing disaster relief and wildfire fighting, significantly impacting New Mexico and beyond. Among its key partnerships is the USDA Forest Service’s Albuquerque Air Tanker Base, a relationship that dates back to 1977. Earlier this year, the air tanker base completed a transformative upgrade with a new ramp designed to accommodate very large air tankers (VLATs). This enhancement promises to significantly boost the efficiency and speed of wildfire responses. “It’s like trading your tried-and-true running shoes in for a brand-new pair that promises peak performance,” says Matt Rau, Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands fire staff officer. Rau likens aerial wildland firefighting to the agility and finesse of elite athletes, where speed and precision are paramount. The relocation of 10 Tanker's headquarters to New Mexico a decade ago spurred the re-evaluation of the base's capabilities. The completion of Project Alpha-Ramp on April 22 now allows full-time access for aircraft such as DC-10s, C-130s, RJ85s, BAE146s, and 737s. Rau emphasizes that the alpha ramp upgrade epitomizes the air tanker base’s operational targets. VLATs are the largest air tankers used by the Forest Service, carrying 9,400 gallons of fire retardant compared to the 3,000-4,000 gallons of large air tankers. The new ramp, capable of handling the heavier payloads of VLATs, is the result of two years of renovation work. Earlier upgrades, secured with over $15 million in funding by New Mexico Senator Martin Heinrich, included increased pumping capabilities and new piping and plumbing in the retardant plant. These improvements have halved the time required to fill an aircraft with fire retardant and reduced it to as little as 10-15 minutes for retardant-only fills. The base is now one of only two in the country that can fill two VLATs simultaneously. Additionally, four new fire retardant tanks, each holding 25,000 gallons, ensure that 75,000 gallons of mixed fire retardant are always available. These tanks streamline operations, with one dedicated to mixing, two for holding, and one for loading. With its enhanced capabilities, the Albuquerque air tanker base is poised to be a critical asset both regionally and nationally, responding to fires across the Southwestern, Rocky Mountain, Intermountain, and Southern regions. The base operates with up to 30 individuals, including full-time and seasonal employees, contractors, and pilots, during fire response operations. In 2021, total domestic firearm production was 12,521,614 – an increase of 28.6 percent over 2020 reported figures. )(Source: 2021 ATF Annual Firearms Manufacturing and Exportation Report) An interim 2022 estimate showed a total of 11,217,388 total firearms were domestically produced. Of those 6,148,877 were pistols, 830,800 were revolvers, 3,575,322 were rifles and 662,389 were shotguns. Those are interim reports and will be updated when complete reports are available from the ATF. From 1990 to 2021, 254,753,372 firearms have been made available to the U.S. market.
