“35 Years of Thanks” [Post 18: Jason Devitt] Long before iPhones and ubiquitous applications, a mobile pioneer, Jason Devitt, launched Vindigo. Vindigo started collecting industry awards in 2000 (eg, Popular Science’s “Best of What’s New”), was the highest ranked private company on Jason Calacanis’ 2001 Silicon Alley 100 list and won “Rookie of the Year” at the MIT Sloan eBusiness Awards a few months later. As someone proud to be Irish (23 & Me says 48%), I was impressed by this former engineering student from Dublin. Jason assembled a talented team with Marci Weisler, Bob Fitterman, Carrie Seifer, and Tricia Han. They created Vindigo applications and published highly successful mobile apps for top brands like MapQuest (a pre-Google market leader) and The New York Times. Vindigo also forged the mobile advertising industry, first generating revenue from the Palm version of its beloved city guide. Vindigo was acquired in 2004 by For-Side in Japan and Jason left in 2005 because he profoundly disagreed with their direction. I chose to leave California in 2006 and join Zingy (as it was known post-merger) in part because I admired what Jason and his team accomplished. I spoke with Jason about his personal experience before I was appointed CEO and after. I valued his perspective. In retrospect, I should have heeded his warnings about the Japanese ownership group, but I was optimistic about effecting change. Most people are unaware Vindigo did not fail because of its U.S. team’s efforts. Vindigo pivoted to respond to an iPhone world with a declining ringtone market and was poised for a turnaround. This, along with respect for Jason, influenced my decision to revert to the name Vindigo. For-Side, however, was increasingly diverting profits with its business in Japan in steep decline. Vindigo might still have survived if not for Japan’s FIE Act which introduced J-SOX requirements. Effective in 2008 for companies like For-Side, it also applied to foreign subsidiaries, so Vindigo needed to be compliant, but was not. They shared this with insufficient time to do anything other than shut it down without putting For-Side’s entire business at risk. They asked me to shut down the U.S. operations and relocate to Tokyo, but I fought to keep Vindigo alive. I identified buyers and worked with Kimberly Bambach, our CFO, to secure legitimate offers enabling us to continue operations with the necessary resources. For-Side placed unreasonable requirements like non-refundable six-figure doc review fees and other hurdles in our way, so it was clear they would never sell. We again pivoted to find jobs for remaining employees and structure the best packages. Only two from Jason’s team remained, but his legacy was cemented long before 2008. I am grateful to Jason for his valuable insights and contributions to the mobile industry. May his home be filled with laughter, may his pockets be filled with gold, and may he have all the happiness his Irish heart can hold.

Recently, people have asked me: "How do I get a job at a venture studio?" Great question! 1. Educate Yourself about Venture Studios. Understand the industry. There's a lot of great content from people inc. Max Pog, Dianna Lesage, Jake Hurwitz, Matthew Burris and others. What you'll realize is that all studios are a bit different, which makes it hard to pinpoint the roles & right fit. 2. Research Individual Studios. A few criteria to consider: * Industry / Vertical focus: More studios are focused on narrower niches. Find one that's relevant. E.g Renan Devillieres runs OSS Ventures-they only build B2B apps for operations. * Corporate or Independent: Corporate venture studios are run by big companies. Working at one means you're an employee of a bigger company. The salary + benefits will be better. Upside is probably non-existent. * How they work: It's tough to figure this out w/o talking to them. You need to understand a studio's methodology for validating & building startups. 3. Figure Out What You Love Doing: People romanticize the 0-1 phase of startup building. It's not romantic. It's not always fun either. A lot of the work is "rinse and repeat" validation, doing things that you probably don't love (i.e. interviewing users, secondary research into markets, etc.) Don't fool yourself into thinking it's all ultra-creative, craftsmanship. We've had excellent product managers, designers and developers burn out on doing a bunch of non-specialized work where they weren't practicing their craft, but doing other things. Working at a studio means you love building businesses NOT products. Building businesses > building products. People THINK they love building businesses when really they want to spend all day in products. You probably never touch scale, b/c you've handed it off before then 4. Everyone wears many hats True in startups as well. And ppl say they love wearing many hats, but I'll challenge that. I think most people DON'T like it. The best studio employees are "generalist specialists" - Jack/Jill of all trades with one area of expertise. You're a designer that also hacks. You're a developer that loves doing market research. And btw, this work NEVER stops. You don't start wearing many hats and "graduate" to specialized functions in a scaling business (unless you leave the studio to join a startup you've built). When you hit 1, you go back to 0 and start all over again. Few other things to consider: 1. Are you joining a studio to become a founder? 2. How can you demonstrate your "generalist specialist" capabilities? A: Side hustles 3. Network through portfolio companies 4. Venture studios may not be a long term career opp. Most studios are < 50 people with minimal hierarchy. Moving up is tough. If you dream of managing ppl, studios are probably a bad fit. ✅ Tomorrow I'll share the Top 10 Questions job seekers should ask venture studios. ✅ Also, I'm launching a job board for venture studios.
