    Naropa University

In this year’s issue of Naropa Magazine, we explore the various and dynamic ways Naropa students, staff, faculty, and alumni are engaging the world to be of benefit. Working at local, national, and international levels, the Naropa community is bringing its contemplative training to a turbulent world in desperate need of more awareness, mindfulness, and compassion. Working at local, national, and international levels, the Naropa community is bringing its contemplative training to a turbulent world in desperate need of more awareness, mindfulness, and compassion. Whether it is bringing a social justice perspective to mental health care, creating a more inclusive theoretical framework for mindfulness research, or producing a show exploring migration across the United States-Mexico border, these stories highlight the ways in which the Naropa community continues to show up and do the work—because it needs to be done.

In training future leaders to draw on mindfulness, compassion, and skillful action, Naropa is answering the call to create a better and more just world. A number of articles showcase the inspiring contributions our alumni are making—locally, nationally, and internationally. We feature creative works by alumni Elizabeth Comport and Swanee Astrid, and student Naomi Brodner; an interview with graduate and frequent guest faculty Laird Hunt; excerpts of recent publications by faculty members Jeanine Canty, Gaylon Ferguson, Karen Kissel Wegela, and Erika Berland; and an excerpt of Fania Davis’s 2017 Bayard and John Cobb Peace Lecture. As with many classes and meetings at Naropa, we end with a bow, here, in memory of our dear friend and teacher Jack Collom.

Some pieces examine intersecting social identities and related systems of oppression, domination, or discrimination through pedagogical approaches, compassionate care, and diversity and leadership. This issue features an interview with Director of Inclusive Community Regina Smith and original writing by Dean of Undergraduate Education Carole Clements, former Naropa president Judy Lief, and a blog post from Judith Simmer-Brown, PhD, Distinguished Professor for Contemplative and Religious Studies. We also excerpt talks given by visiting luminaries angel Kyodo williams, Vassar Byrd, and Laura Rendon.

Projects

  • Brand Journalism

    - Present

Marketing has outgrown simple branding, and the internet has made the landscape of everyone's living room the home base for your brand. But the industry is missing out on the power of the story, and how it brings people to your brand and then makes them evangelists. My goal is to teach your company that your story is important, interesting and effective - all you need is someone who can write to get it going for you.
