As promised, here are those EternAloy Corporation finishing inserts after doing around 200 parts in A2 with a single edge! The finishes kept great right up until the end when we figured it was probably time to flip it - but we probably could have gotten away with more parts as the tool and edge life has been impressive! These are the inserts I posed a little while ago where the particles that make up the insert itself are coated with nanolayers of carbide and cobalt, and then pressed and sintered like regular ol’ carbide powders. Like a peanut M&M where the chocolate is the WC nanolayer and cobalt is the candy shell, it’s pretty wild how well these are standing up compared to our typical coated carbide finishers! _______________ We make excellent parts. I’ve always found it intriguing how people end up in the careers they’re in. Each journey is unique and full of unexpected turns. Here’s a peek into my own path into CNC machining: Life has a funny way of leading us to where we’re meant to be. My journey into CNC machining began in my early 20s, during a challenging time as I was going through a divorce. At that point, I was a stay-at-home mom with no work experience. 💔👶 My parents had a startup contract machine shop, and I began helping out part-time with office work. But when my dad needed someone to handle the "dirty" work, I found myself running a tumbler (yes, a 5-gallon bucket and a dryer!) and getting quite literally dirty. 🛠️💦 As the workload grew, I started learning to operate machines and master micrometers and calipers—let me tell you, that was no easy feat IYKYK! Understanding the importance of quality became a key part of my learning curve. Eventually, my dad offered me a full-time position, and I was thrown into the world of programming Haas machines. Soft jaws save sanity! Here we are adding a cross hole, a milled feature, and a slot to these components after they come off the lathe. Optimally, we would be doing all of this in one shot on our live tooling lathe, but when it’s tied up with other work - you do what you gotta do! I’m not even sure how you’d START to program these parts! Wild stuff on display at the Mastercam booth - and you couldn’t keep the Minnesotan Bradley Thomas away from that hockey mask! This guitar - which was one of the stars of IMTS - International Manufacturing Technology Show - is fully machined in three pieces - and just look at those finishes! The applications engineer who programmed it said the neck and headstock component was the most challenging to do, and I can most certainly believe it! Splitting some 4340 collets inside the live tooling lathe! These were certainly a learning experience - it’s funny how each time you run something, you think of ways to improve it for the next time. While the top-down approach with this .09” dia endmill certainly worked, we realized that switching to a slit saw or woodruff cutter for the next time will likely be able to pull some cycle time out. Couldn't save pictures and videos together on the same post. The coolant flowing over the head while machining made the head look very cool & evil LOL Have a lot of fun and felt like Indiana Jones of Raiders of the Lost Ark approaching the head replacing with a bag of sand then running from the large boulder LOL This is an actual part being used for testing purposes and not just making one head. My customer is making many of them.
