Universal Basic Income seems to have gone by the wayside since Andre Yang brought this up in his 2020 presidential bid. This blurb by James O'Brien, CS professor at UC Berkeley, makes a case why his future CS graduates may be replaced by automation and AI. https://lnkd.in/gYhjK3zr Crazy to think how new CS college graduates will have fewer opportunities to grow their skills when AI is sucking up the entry level CS jobs. The professor's comments on students now switching focus to AI and data science is prescient. What focus could be next when AI and data science human software engineering expertise needs wain? The last two major union strikes in the US faced major roadblocks negotiating the roles of automation, robotics and AI replacing skilled union workers. This is no longer a blue collar only concern and I appreciate the professor's comments about corporations reaping the benefits of AI, robotics and automation (e.g. drastically reduced headcount and overhead) paying those benefits forward as the primary feeder for UBI. Or we could wait for a major planet life altering event (e.g. Pandemic) to thin the herd. Perhaps a bigger question to ponder is what happens if a massive electromagnetic radiation storm takes out those AI datacenters and there is no one left with the skills to replace the machines;-)

Pre-Industrailization period or about 1750s, the World's population was about 0.77 billion. When the 1st Industrial Revolution came, the spike in "new" jobs creation. By 1880s, or about 100-years later, the 2nd Industrial Revolution added Electricians beyond Coal-fired steam Boilers for power generation. Petroleum accelerated that and created Automobile, at the expense of horses and horseshoes (blacksmiths went out of jobs). But they went into steel beams to building skyscrapers, thanks to more coal-fired furnaces to melting iron. After World War 2, or about that time, Hewlett-Packard founded in 1939 and grew Silicon Valley from 1945 thru 1960s. The birth of Semiconductor as 3rd Industrial Revolution and PC came along but office secretaries needed to SkillsFuture. Later, the internet and smart devices, came IoT or Internet of Things, from 2010s, the Industry 4.0, enabled by fossil fuel, power generation, electrification and semiconductors. Today, the World has over 10x population than pre-Industrailization of the early 1700s. Therefore, Industrial Revolutions didn't reduce jobs from a number perspective, but shifted the nature of jobs from secretaries, perhaps to Administrative Managers. OECD countries come in with about 4.9% unemployment rate - To counter claim someone within LinkedIn, Industrial Revolutions and Automation reduce jobs? * Today, we might see over 90% unemployment? I rest my case on the past 4 Industrial Revolutions have helped the World grow and improve quality of life. But the caveat, can mother Earth sustain at current rate of resources mining, pollution, climate change and over population in some countries? Industry 5.0 of Machine Intelligence with Human-Robot Collaborative & Human-centric Autonomy has a twist that I might hypothesize beyond the past Industrializations. Singapore Policymakers ought to review my comments - If Humanoid Robots with Machine Intelligence can do the tasks of many workers thru 2035, while workers struggle to SkillsFuture into Creative, Strategic and Innovation jobs ... This Industrial Revolution, while creating Jobs of the Future as Roboticist AI, but might be "slower" than many workers can cope up losing or put into early retirement. I see beyond Climate Change as a threat to Humanity, it will be the Machines that will "Terminator" Jobs. This is my hypothesis, as Singapore's top leading Roboticist AI Researcher, Practitioner and Educator, I need to put this information as possibility. While on the defensive and preamp, Singapore Policymakers and Parents have to get our next-generation Singaporeans into Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics as STEM Education to build FutureReady foundation. From 1st July 2024, I will devote 50% of my time to see Singapore make it thru Industry 5.0 of Machine Intelligence, beyond this local Educational Institution and Research Lab - Do support my Leadership Initiative as a Singapore-born Singaporean Scientist Engineer.

The Decline of Core Engineering Skills in Computer Science Over the past 25 years, I've observed a concerning trend in computer science education. Many graduates today seem less interested in foundational engineering courses like #digitaldesign, #computerarchitecture, #microprocessors, #microcontrollers, #embeddedsystems, etc. Instead, they prioritize pure computer science subjects, aiming for minimal grades in core engineering courses. This shift has led to a noticeable decline in the overall engineering knowledge of recent graduates compared to those from a decade ago. I recently had the pleasure of catching up with Lukas Pankau, CEO of Industrial Next after SF Tech Week. We spent nearly two hours discussing the future of robotics in manufacturing—a conversation that brought me back to my teenage years and my dream of running a robotics company. From Part 2 of my Waymo Emails: Not many engineers pay attention to fluids and how they impact sensors, but Waymo does. In their blog post « Guided by the Flow » they show how using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations helps reducing drag and improving sensor longevity. California Teachers Are Using AI To Grade Papers. Who’s Grading The AI? Your children could be some of a growing number of California kids having their writing graded by software instead of a teacher. California school districts are signing more contracts for artificial intelligence tools, from automated grading in San Diego to chatbots in central California, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. English teachers say AI tools can help them grade papers faster, get students more feedback, and improve their learning experience. But guidelines are vague and adoption by teachers and districts is spotty. The California Department of Education can’t tell you which schools use AI or how much they pay for it. The state doesn’t track AI use by school districts, said Katherine Goyette, computer science coordinator for the California Department of Education. While Goyette said chatbots are the most common form of AI she’s encountered in schools, more and more California teachers are using AI tools to help grade student work. That’s consistent with surveys that have found teachers use AI as often if not more than students, news that contrasts sharply with headlines about fears of students cheating with AI. Teachers use AI to do things like personalize reading material, create lesson plans, and other tasks in order to save time and and reduce burnout. A report issued last fall in response to an AI executive order by Gov. Gavin Newsom mentions opportunities to use AI for tutoring, summarization, and personalized content generation, but also labels education a risky use case. Generative AI tools have been known to create convincing but inaccurate answers to questions, and use toxic language or imagery laden with racism or sexism. California issued guidance for how educators should use the technology last fall, one of seven states to do so. It encourages critical analysis of text and imagery created by AI models and conversations between teachers and students about what amounts to ethical or appropriate use of AI in the classroom. But no specific mention is made of how teachers should treat AI that grades assignments. Additionally, the California education code states that guidance from the state is “merely exemplary, and that compliance with the guidelines is not mandatory.” Goyette said she’s waiting to see if the California Legislature passes Senate Bill 1288, which would require state Superintendent Tony Thurmond to create an AI working group to issue further guidance to local school districts on how to safely use AI. Cosponsored by Thurmond, the bill also calls for an assessment of the current state of AI in education and for the identification of forms of AI that can harm students and educators by 2026.

We are running the next ASTRA-sim tutorial at MICRO 2024! In this tutorial we will introduce MLCommons Chakra - a distributed ML workload schema that we have been collaboratively developing since the last 1+ year.
