Real-time payment options in the U.S. remain limited, especially within digital wallets. Existing solutions like Same Day ACH, Mastercard Send, Visa Direct, the #RTP network, and #FedNow offer faster processing, but adoption has been slow, and the system is fragmented. On-chain digital assets, particularly stablecoins like Tether.io (USDT) and Circle's USD Coin (USDC), could expand the ecosystem by enabling near-instant transactions. These blockchain-based assets provide an alternative to traditional rails like ACH, offering secure, faster payments with global accessibility. Stablecoins' increasing integration into payment systems could drive competition and innovation, complementing current solutions. Access to NFC technology on smartphones, if broadened (as we are observing with Apple's announcement), could further accelerate adoption. NFC powers tap-and-go payments, and expanding access would allow developers to create their own contactless systems, potentially including for stablecoins like USDC. This would make transactions at point-of-sale terminals seamless, confirmed through biometric authentication and settled instantly on-chain. The combination of NFC capabilities and low-fee blockchains like Solana or Avalanche could lead to frictionless, low-cost crypto payments, with merchants potentially offering discounts for on-chain transactions. Stablecoin regulation, once in place, would incentivize merchants to adopt this cheaper, more efficient payment mechanism. As digital wallets like PayPal integrate real-time payout capabilities, the mix of #blockchain-based assets and traditional systems will offer consumers more #payment options. In 2007, a company I operated became an issuer processor, bringing the MasterCard MIP in-house to support debit card processing for a community bank in South Texas. Our tiny office was in the same building as our data center, and we always used their conference room to host client meetings. We were too embarrassed to bring anyone through our doors—it looked like an abandoned DMV, complete with crumbling ceiling tiles. During those client meetings, we’d give them a tour of the data center as if we owned the place. We’d walk them to our cage, and from the door, they could see the MasterCard cabinet housing the MIP. I was always proud of this part of the show. It demonstrated to our clients that we were directly connected to the “nuclear reactor” known as MasterCard, with no middle layer—just the bank and us. Fewer moving parts meant less cost, less risk, and more flexibility to build. Fast forward a few decades, and we're back to bare metal—this time with Fedline. A direct connection to the Fed with our own routing number offers the same benefits to our FI customers today. Did you know that in cross-border transactions, money doesn’t actually move physically across borders—a common misconception. This is because currencies operate within closed-loop systems that are restricted to their own domestic payment infrastructures. For instance, U.S. payment systems like ACH, CHIPS, RTP, Fedwire, and FedNow settle transactions in U.S. dollars and are currently not compatible with foreign payment systems such as UPI in India or T2 in Europe. That's just a small fact of cross-border payments. The entire system is like a Rube Goldberg machine, indeed reaching levels of absurdity. We just accept it as is. But let's question it. Scenario 4️⃣ You've had it with that hostage feeling created by everything around you. You, or someone you assign, commits to learning the basics of what makes up processing infrastructure regardless of vendor or technology - 30 minutes a day for the next 90 days. You make a decision to act and methodically start to assemble the pieces over time. ID verification providers are missing out on decentralized reusable ID technology. It's an up-for-grabs market opportunity! Take this example: You're an ID provider for a bank. You know the bank's customers also use other services where you handle the ID verification process. Think of other bank subsidiaries, rental agencies, credit bureaus, insurance companies, etc. You know you can help them reduce friction during onboarding and close more clients if ID verification is smoother. Because you have already verified these customers' IDs once, you can help them skip a significant portion of this frustrating and time-consuming step. • Customers will be happy to skip it. • Those services will be happy with improved conversion rates and more customers. • You'll be happy because you can charge them for it and onboard more clients looking to consume that reusable verified ID data. Chargebacks... how many are allowed? This is a question we get asked all the time! 1% - 2% - 3% ... The correct answer is .05% Will a processor tolerate 1%? The rules... say this: Visa has a tiered system for chargeback thresholds, called the Visa Dispute Monitoring Program (VDMP), based on how many chargebacks a merchant has each month: Early Warning: 0.65% chargeback ratio and 75 chargebacks Standard: 0.9% chargeback ratio and 100 chargebacks Excessive: 1.8% chargeback ratio and 1,000 chargebacks Ideally, the processors want you to be at half a percent or less! Under 1%, you are good, but you need to put something in place with a chargeback company! In 2001, when we started this business, it was 3%, and it keeps going down. What do I think? - I think the card brands must determine how to protect businesses from friendly fraud. How do you deal with chargebacks?

Visa has launched a "flexible credential" feature in the U.S. and UAE to give consumers more choice and convenience in how they manage their payments. Users can now make payments from multiple funding sources using a single Visa card, meeting the growing demand for flexibility in financial transactions. Already live in several Asian markets, including Hong Kong, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, the Flexible Credentials feature allows Visa to support consumers' evolving needs as e-commerce and digital payments grow globally. A recent Visa study found that 51% of users prioritize the ability to access multiple accounts and funding sources with a single card, underscoring the importance of this innovation in today's marketplace. For the U.S. launch, Visa has partnered with fintech company Affirm, which brings its own base of 1.4 million active cardholders to the mix. In the UAE, Visa is partnering with Liv Digital Bank, extending its reach to provide an even more seamless cross-border payment experience. 💡 Last week European Payments Council published third version of Mobile Initiated Sepa (Instant) Credit Transfer and Interoperability Guidance. Below is few highlights from the guidance SEPA Instant Credit Transfers are gaining traction within the SEPA framework, with mobile channels anticipated to play a crucial role in their adoption. Retailers being increasingly interested in SCT-based payments for both in-store transactions and mobile commerce, viewing them as a complement to traditional card payments. Several European countries have already launched various solutions in this area, reflecting the growing momentum for instant payments. Mobile Initiated SEPA (Instant) Credit Transfers (MSCTs) represent a modern approach to digital payments, allowing users to initiate instant credit transfers directly from their mobile devices. 💡 MSCT Transaction Mechanics MSCTs encompass both SCT Inst (SEPA Credit Transfer Instant) and SCT (SEPA Credit Transfer) transactions initiated through mobile devices. These transactions utilize existing payment infrastructures in the inter-PSP (Payment Service Provider) space, focusing on interactions beyond this space, such as between the payer's mobile device and the point of interaction (POI). 💡 Modes of MSCT Transactions There are two primary modes of MSCT transactions based on how payment initiation data is exchanged: 💡 Payee-Presented Data: In this mode, the payee provides necessary data to the payer, either through direct presentation or prior sharing (e.g., P2P payments). This method is widely adopted for various payment contexts, particularly P2P and consumer-to-business (C2B) payments at physical points of sale (POI), often using QR codes. 💡 Payer-Presented Data: Here, the payer provides their identification data to the payee, which can be shared through proximity technology or manually entered. This mode is appealing for businesses wanting to offer enhanced customer experiences but faces challenges such as the need for compatible POI terminals and security concerns regarding data generation. Walmart-backed fintech One introduces buy now, pay later as it prepares bigger push into lending. The move puts One in direct competition with Affirm, the exclusive provider of installment loans for Walmart customers since 2019. There are signs that One is making a deeper push into lending beyond installment loans. "Walmart intends to offer its branded credit cards through One in the future,” Capital One said last year in response to Walmart’s suit. “With One, Walmart is positioning itself to compete directly with Capital One to provide credit and payment products to Walmart customers.” One has obtained lending licenses that allow it to operate in nearly every U.S. state, according to filings and its website.
