The The International Regenerative Technology Alliance (IRTA) was developed to address the complimentary needs of patients and physicians in better understanding the promise of medical innovation. As an organization, the IRTA seeks to provide three necessary and critical resources to advance the understanding, role and access to regenerative therapies through:

Oversight: With the development of global standards for medical and laboratory facilities as well as clinicians participating in approved clinical studies, the IRTA provides peer-guided supervision for providing access to investigational therapies.

Transparency: Through the management of an institutional review board registered with the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the IRTA provides a superior level of clarity about the processes of investigational therapies in order to minimize the risk to patients.

Patient Safety: Every patient asks whether a treatment is safe. Without data physicians are unable to answer this question. To help inform both patients and physicians about the long-term impact, safety and effectiveness of investigational therapy, the IRTA manages a robust, web-based treatment registry.

The IRTA is a US-based, 501-c-3 nonprofit organization. We are supported by generous contributions from patients, physicians and organizations active in the advancement of regenerative medicine and technology worldwide. The IRTA is guided by a volunteer Board of Directors and a Board of Trustees representing the many national chapters of the organization worldwide.

Cell-based therapies (CBTs) have been hailed for the last two decades as the next pillar of healthcare, yet the clinical and commercial potential of regenerative medicine has yet to live up to the hype. While recent analysis has suggested that regenerative medicine is maturing into a multibillion dollar industry, examples of clinical and commercial success are still relatively rare [1–3]. With 30 years of laboratory and clinical efforts fueled by countless billions in public and private funding, one must contemplate why CBTs have not made a greater impact. The current regulatory environment, with its zero-risk stance, stymies clinical innovation while fueling a potentially risky medical tourism industry. Here, we highlight the challenges the US FDA faces and present talking points for an improved regulatory framework for autologous CBTs.
