Today is #BlackWomen'sEqualPayDay. This is the approximate day a Black woman must work into the new year to make what white, non-Hispanic men made at the end of the previous year.For this year's Black Women's Equal Pay Day, let's urge members of Congress to pass the following acts: Paycheck Fairness Act (PFA) - This act would modernize and strengthen the Equal Pay Act of 1963 to better combat pay discrimination and close the wage gap, by protecting workers from retaliation for discussing pay, banning the use of prior salary history, providing stronger remedies, and codifying pay data collection. https://p2a.co/liUq6uO BeHEARD Act - The Bringing an End to Harassment by Enhancing Accountability and Rejecting Discrimination in the Workplace Act, is a comprehensive legislation to address workplace harassment. Today is National Black Travel Day, and as an advisory board member of the Black Travel Alliance since 2022, this is an issue dear to my heart and passion for travel being accessible to everyone. The day was established by the Black Travel Summit (BTS) to honor the Black travel community, recognize the importance of Black culture in travel, and celebrate the impact of Black travelers. It also serves as a reminder to support diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) in the travel industry.    The day was chosen to commemorate the birthday of Barrington Irving, the first and only Black person to fly solo around the world in 2007.  Some ways to celebrate National Black Travel Day include supporting Black travel professionals and organizations, highlighting your company's actions toward workplace diversity, and acknowledging the growth of wellness travel. Most importantly, though, we need to constantly remember that representation is crucial, no matter what industry or company. Whilst focus on and commitment to Black travelers has increased since 2020, there's still a very long way to go before travelers of color will feel fully welcomed and included, and we always need more allies to help drive this forward.

The Inclusion Index helps organizations understand trends and opportunities in demographic representation, creates a road map to drive internal change, and identifies diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) solutions to close any gaps. As Black women gain recognition in highly visible positions, they are faced with various misconceptions that impact their life. When entering visible positions or running for office, black women have to not only work against racial and gendered misconceptions but also present themselves in a relatable way. The balancing act puts high-levels of stress on black women that do not exist for other candidates. We’ll discuss those misconceptions and ways to fairly evaluate their candidacy. Finding My Path, My Way As we celebrate Black History Month, I’ve been reflecting on the theme of Reclaiming Narratives. For me, it’s not just about honoring the stories of the past, it’s about owning and shaping our own journeys. Every path has its twists and turns, and mine has been no different. When I first moved to the UK, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was drawn to anthropology because I’m fascinated by people and culture, but life had other plans. I got pushed into a “practical” route that didn’t feel right, and for a while, I was totally lost. Then, after conversation after conversation with my people the topic around HR came up. With zero experience but a “why not” attitude, I jumped into a master’s program. No grand plan, just hoping to figure it out along the way. That’s when everything started to fall in place. I was seconded into an HR systems and data role, and suddenly, it all made sense. I wasn’t just crunching numbers, I was uncovering stories. Real insights about people, their experiences, and how the workplace could change for the better. That’s when I knew: this is where I want to be. Now, I’m using data to make real impact, helping organisations understand their people, and making sure diversity isn’t just a buzzword. And I’m doing it on my terms, with my own story leading the way. This Black History Month, it’s all about reclaiming our narratives. We don’t always have the perfect roadmap, but the journey teaches you who you are, and where you’re meant to be. 🙌🏾Don’t be afraid of detours – Your path might not always be clear, but every step teaches you something valuable. 🙌🏾Find your passion – When you’re unsure, keep exploring. The right fit might surprise you, just like data surprised me! 🙌🏾Use your skills for impact – Whatever your niche is, find ways to make a difference. In my case, it’s using data to help build better, more inclusive workplaces. 🙌🏾Ask for help – Conversations with mentors, family, or peers can open doors you never considered. In any leadership role, but particularly for a CHRO, it's essential to recognize the influence they have and the responsibility that comes with it. As we all know, Human Resources isn't just about managing policies or payroll, it's about stewarding the most valuable resource of all: people. CHROs must be thoughtful about how they use both their human and organizational resources. Using resources wisely is a critical responsibility. This includes, championing fairness, investing in people, and allocating training, development, and wellness resources wisely. Every dollar and hour invested in the workforce should be aimed at long-term growth and employee well-being, not short-term gains or budget cuts. The CHRO position has the ability to drive change, build cultures, and create lasting impact, but only if resources and authority are used responsibly. It's not about power; it's about stewardship. Super excited to announce that I passed the exam, and I am now a SHRM Senior Certified Professional! The SHRM-SCP certification is for individuals whose work includes duties such as developing HR policies or procedures, overseeing the execution of integrated HR operations, directing an entire HR enterprise or leading the alignment of HR strategies to organizational goals. The exam includes knowledge-based items that assess knowledge and understanding of factual information, and scenario-based situational judgment items that assess judgment and decision-making skills. The test has an approximately 50% pass rate, so I'm pumped that I nailed it on the first try. Empowered at the Global Black Economic Forum Being in the room at the Global Black Economic Forum as this report was unveiled was empowering beyond words. Witnessing leaders come together to advocate for Black and marginalized communities was truly inspiring. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics we ended September with 7.4 million job openings, relatively unchanged from the prior month. And, hires stayed steady at 5.6 million. How do we close the gap on these 2 million jobs? On this #HRThursday let’s talk #TalentAcquisition When I started my career we would post job openings in the newspaper and have an open house. Then I got super creative and started advertising on the radio! My how times have changed…. Today’s talent acquisition leaders are playing in the space of “personalized recruiting” as we compete over a shrinking talent pool. Personalized Recruiting involves tailoring the whole recruitment process to meet each applicant's unique needs and preferences. Personalization can take many forms like unique communications, customized emails, and communication strategies based on the candidate's profile and preferences. This approach calls us to align recruiting with our organization’s social media strategy, technology roadmap and strategic plan. Instead of “posting and hoping”, today fortune favors actively reaching out to draw people to you. Targeted social media campaigns and personalized recruitment videos work, but they do take more time. And patience from the system. The rule of 7 shows that customers need to see your brand at least 7 times before they commit to a purchase decision. Translation; clicking a link to apply can take at least 7 contacts/touch points. SHRM recently reported that 72% of HR leaders are using AI in recruitment. This could range from AI scrubbing applications, to writing/sending personalized messages to bots pulling candidates from the internet. Once you have a candidate on the hook, personalization increases candidate engagement by 35%. Savvy talent acquisition leaders don’t wait to schedule an onsite meeting, they quickly get on the phone for virtual interviews and text candidates to keep them involved at each step. They use technology and move fast to get the candidate an offer. Today’s talent acquisition team has a new best friend: #OrganizationalDevelopment. You have talent within your company to mine! Creating skill-based platforms like GitHub, Kaggle provide direct skill demonstration. Leveraging real-world project assessments replaces traditional interviews. Showing your employees their career options (think lattice not ladder) and moving them into new role, maybe even creating customized roles, for their own development. Instead of an open house for external candidates, hold a networking event or skill-building workshop for employees only (call it perq and give out free snacks). A few days late sharing this, but as you likely already know, Ashley Panelli and I have the privilege of being the first Black women to lead 9to5. While it's an exciting shift to Black leadership and a shared leadership model, it is not without challenges. Specifically, we wrote this article to highlight the challenge of the under-funding of Black-led organizations. It's a call to action for funders to make deep mulit-year investments in Black leadership and not simply lip service.

90 days ago, SHRM put forth the challenge to start 1 million civil conversations in the workplace and beyond… How is your team doing? There are plenty of opportunities to practice civility in the workplace, whether it's discussing policies, giving constructive feedback or having difficult conversations with a colleague. Recently, two of my colleagues did a great job practicing civility. One team member shared their opinion on a local ballot measure, while the other held the opposite viewpoint. As their conversation grew more intense, they chose to listen to each other's perspectives and ask thoughtful questions. By the end of their discussion, the two reached a point of mutual understanding, even though they still held different opinions. The conversation was enlightening for both of them, and they walked away with new insights. Most importantly, they maintained their respect for each other, demonstrating the power of civil conversations in the workplace. #CivilityAtWork #PolicyNotPolitics #Respect

🌐 Today, I am honored to co-host the “Navigating the Post-Election Landscape” Roundtable beside Anthony P. Howard, with a special focus on Black HR Professionals. In this session, we are addressing the unique challenges that Black HR leaders face as they navigate the next normal in our workplaces and communities. With so much change and opportunity on the horizon, it is essential to explore how we can best support each other and advance strategies that foster inclusive, resilient environments.
