MARTIN GROVE'S HOLLYWOOD REPORT FOR 9/22/24: TRANSFORMERS ONE transformed into TRANSFORMERS #2, losing its very close race with BEETLEJUICE.   Between them, the two films did $51M, making exhibitors the weekend's real winner, especially when you include what moviegoers likely spent on snacks.     After an encouraging $3.4M from Wednesday's fan shows & Thursday's previews, Hollywood handicappers saw Paramount/Hasbro Entertainment's PG animated action adventure TRANSFORMERS ONE opening to a sizzling $35-40M. Instead, it did a fizzling $25M with post-mortem explanations that it's a PG family film not a PG-13 fanboy event.   ONE was tracking best for first choice with over-25 men (four points over norm) and next best with men under 25 (just one point over norm). Women over 25 were only equal to norm. And under 25 women didn't care at all (four points under norm). That's not a winning combination of demos! Rotten Tomatoes critics, however, are happy at 89% and audiences love it at 98%, which should mean great word of mouth.   Fortunately for exhibs, WB/Plan B Entertainment's PG-13 fantasy horror comedy BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE showed holdover strength in  weekend three to finish #1 with $26M, off just 49%, per Comscore.   This weekend's domestic marketplace totaled $82M, per Comscore Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian, down 16.1% from the prior weekend, but up 51% vs. this time last year. Comscore's year to date tally has 2024 at $6.19B, down 12% from $7.03B in 2023. The previous weekend, 2024 was down also 12% vs. 2023.   Meanwhile, back at the multiplexes: B2's $26M was from 4,172 theatres ($6,232), per Comscore. It reportedly cost $100M to produce and has grossed $226.8M domestic and $329.7M worldwide to date.   TRANSFORMERS ONE's $25M was from 3,978 theatres ($6,285), per Comscore. Produced reportedly for just $75M, it's also done $14M in international theatres for a worldwide cume of $39M.    Universal/Blumhouse Productions' R rated horror thriller SPEAK NO EVIL was a solid #3 in weekend two with $5.9M, down only 48%, at 3,375 theatres ($1,748). It reportedly cost just $15M to produce and has grossed $21.5M domestic and $42.4M worldwide.   Next weekend (9/27) should see lots of available multiplex parking thanks to Lionsgate/American Zoetrope's launch of writer/director Francis Ford Coppola R rated sci-fi drama MEGALOPOLIS. Hollywood BUZZ-ards expect it to do just $5M at about 1,550 theatres. It's tracking below norm for first choice with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics hate it at 51%.   Universal/Dreamworks Animation's PG rated sci-fi adventure THE WILD ROBOT, opening at about 3,700 theatres, is tracking below norm for first choice with all demos. Rotten Tomatoes critics are cheering wildly at 100%. This is excellent news! I’m a believer in great content. Even more so, if push comes to shove, I’m camp “content pushes technology” always instead of vice versa. I know there have been a lot of “big announcements” and bold actions in the broader Metaverse/XR/VR/AR/3D, etc. space over the last few years. Especially out of the META camp. With somewhat mixed results overall. However, META keeps pushing and keeps putting money where its words are. While many others dropped out along the way. Also, this is James Cameron, after all. Probably that one “Director meets innovator”-personality leading the pack globally to unite big visions with cutting-edge entertainment technology for stories that relate to truly wide audiences. With all the recent upheaval in #TV advertising, few things are as certain as the NFL's dominance. EDO's latest TV outcomes report, highlighted by Jason Notte in ADWEEK, reveals how linear and streaming NFL programming drive some of the most effective broadcasts of the year. For instance, ads that ran last NFL regular season were 8% more effective than the primetime average, 52% more effective in the playoffs, and a Chiefs-49ers Super Bowl generated 198%, or nearly triple, the effectiveness of a primetime ad. Now these creative industries are collaborating physically, digitally, and culturally. ► Randy Davidson, Jezlan Moyet and team continue to do an amazing job currating community and generating awareness around this "Creative Economy". What legislators once saw as "Film & TV" they now appreciate as being so much more broader and larger economically and culturally. Industry leaders & creatives are embracing collaboration and community-building. ► You can't grow what you don't define and measure. Thanks to David Sutherland for putting structure around "Creative Economy". It isn't fuzzy. It has a definition and includes specific industry segments and contributes over $2 Trillion globally, and $23.8 billion to Georgia annually. ► You can't grow what you don't train for. Thanks to C Scott Votaw and Georgia Film Academy for continuing to train for the broad set of Creative Industries, with a vision of accessibility across the entire state. ► You can't grow if you are not resilient. We are in a disruptive time of technology, business models, and consumer entertainment consumption habits. Silos are frail. Cross-disciplinary communities are robust. The Creative Economy future in Georgia is strong. And appreciative that that Skillshot Media and Ghost Gaming are one part of the collaborate creative community on display last night!

The digital streaming landscape continues to evolve, bringing unparalleled convenience and innovative content to consumers. However, recent high-profile streaming issues—such as those reported by Netflix during the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight—highlight a persistent challenge: overcoming technical hurdles that the #cable industry had years to refine. One of the most likely culprits behind Netflix's streaming difficulties is a Content Delivery Network (CDN) issue. CDNs are crucial for delivering #content efficiently to a global audience, particularly during high-demand events. Netflix, known for its technological sophistication, has invested heavily in its own proprietary CDN, Netflix Open Connect, to optimize on-demand streaming. However, it remains unclear whether this CDN is being utilized for live streaming or if a different infrastructure is in place (perhaps a third-party service). This raises important questions about the readiness and scalability of current #streaming services, including Netflix, to handle live, high-profile events. The issue of scalability, particularly during surges in demand for live content, is a hurdle streaming platforms must overcome. Traditional cable providers, with decades to optimize their infrastructure, (arguably) largely solved these challenges. Streaming services, by contrast, are navigating these complexities with far less time to mature their technologies. It’s also important to acknowledge that streaming, as a medium, is still relatively new. These "kinks" are part of the growing pains associated with a rapidly evolving industry. As more platforms venture into live and interactive offerings, having the right technology is critical. Ensuring a seamless experience during high-stakes events like this requires robust, next-generation solutions capable of handling unpredictable demand spikes. What’s particularly notable in this case is that Netflix, widely regarded as a leader in streaming technology, has encountered such challenges. If even Netflix struggles with live event streaming despite its proprietary CDN and years of innovation, other platforms that lag behind in technological sophistication are likely to face even greater challenges. The key takeaway for the industry is clear: pay attention to your technology stack. Since merging with Ticketmaster in 2010, Live Nation Entertainment has exploded in growth—from a $2 billion market cap to over $25 billion today. CEO Michael Rapino has led the charge, reshaping the live music industry. Let’s look at how they got here: Vertical Integration: They control everything—tickets, promotion, artist management, and venues—allowing them to dominate the live music ecosystem. Global Expansion: By acquiring promoters and venues worldwide, they’ve locked in exclusive deals, now dominating concerts and festivals globally. The Shift to Live Experiences: As streaming income dropped, artists turned to touring for revenue, making Live Nation essential for big-name acts. Sponsorship & Advertising: VIP packages and brand partnerships have helped fuel growth beyond ticket sales. But their rise hasn’t been without controversy. Concerns have grown over monopolistic control, especially regarding ticket prices and competition. Another World VR is a free-roam multiplayer immersive game arena that just opened in New Orleans. Groups of up to 6 people can play a growing catalog of games ranging from adult zombie-shooters to all-ages space exploration. Right now the experiences are running on the Meta Quest 3, and owner Jocelyn Walker has plans to bring in haptic vests and other effects over time. Hopefully we'll have a menu of options for the effects we want and how deep we want to go. I appreciate the immersion offered by haptics, like what I experienced at The Void years ago, and I've incorporated them into some of my experiences. What I didn't appreciate was feeling every ZING when my elderly step-mom got confused and kept shooting me during our entire experience because she thought I was an enemy Stormtrooper.
