What do the swing states want? ❤️ Romance ❤️ In a recent study commissioned by Roku, the findings about our seven-swing-states were both informative and surprising. (1) In these states, 67% are "cord cutters" or "cord nevers" meaning they do not utilize traditional cable or broadcast to connect with content (compared with a 50% split between "cutters" and "traditional" across the USA); (2) They consume more news than the average; (3) When they seek specific content to engage with, their number one choice? Romance (romantic comedy and romantic stories)! Bottom Line: Even in troubled times, positivity is what people are looking for - in an increasingly digital only world.

MY LATEST from Wireless Infrastructure Association #ConnectX24 The reality of the 5G slowdown is crystal clear here at the Wireless Infrastructure Association's (WIA) annual trade show. WIA represents many of the nation's cell tower owners, and its show is ground zero for many of the companies that have been struggling to stay afloat amid a downturn in wireless network operator spending. "It doesn't feel like [5G] reality has lived up to the hype," said David Yacoub, CEO of cell tower construction company Site Link. He said 5G technology hasn't upended everyday life with autonomous cars and robot surgeons, as early 5G proponents promised it would. Nonetheless, many WIA show attendees, including Yacoub, remain upbeat about the future. For example, Yacoub said that his company is not embarking on a cost-cutting program involving layoffs. He explained that it's difficult to hire quality employees, and it will ultimately be less expensive for his company to simply retain its existing workforce rather than firing them and then trying to hire them again later, when network operator spending resumes. In that regard, he's rejecting the strategy employed by big players like Ericsson and Crown Castle, which have both engaged in layoffs in order to reduce costs. Super bundles is not just about adding streaming content to wireless and broadband... It's just as relevant for retail (e.g., Walmart+ giving members Paramount+ or Carrefour+ giving members Netflix), or for banks (e.g., Monzo Bank offering customers the Financial Times)... Another big win for SVTA Open Caching, again proving that an interoperable framework for content delivery (versus a proprietary one) is what operators want. And given that operators are the gatekeepers to the eyeballs (through their broadband subscribers) perhaps it’s time the industry leans into Open Caching as the way to build the delivery network that the future of streaming really needs.

Congress Lets Broadband Funding Run Out, Ending $30 Low-Income Discounts: An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: The Federal Communications Commission chair today made a final plea to Congress, asking for money to continue a broadband-affordability program that gave out its last round of $30 discounts to people with low incomes in April. The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) has lowered monthly Internet bills for people who qualify for benefits, but Congress allowed funding to run out. People may receive up to $14 in May if their ISP opted into offering a partial discount during the program's final month. After that there will be no financial help for the 23 million households enrolled in the program. "Additional funding from Congress is the only near-term solution for keeping the ACP going," FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel wrote in a letter to members of Congress today. "If additional funding is not promptly appropriated, the one in six households nationwide that rely on this program will face rising bills and increasing disconnection. In fact, according to our survey of ACP beneficiaries, 77 percent of participating households report that losing this benefit would disrupt their service by making them change their plan or lead to them dropping Internet service entirely." The ACP started with $14.2 billion allocated by Congress in late 2021. The $30 monthly ACP benefit replaced the previous $50 monthly subsidy from the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program.
