🌊 Excess Inventory Ahead? Potential Risks in Semiconductor Investment 🎲 It's interesting to see my conversations with leaders at semiconductor firms from months ago begin to show in the data published by major industry news sources. It's no secret that investment money is flowing and there's a massive influx of large capital projects towards building chip fabs. The predictions I've heard point towards the 2nd half of 2024 being the trying period for capital investments. In light of the recent semiconductor slowdown, and the impact that the oversupply caused the memory market - many firms are strategically trying to limit the speed at which capacity increases. "According to DIGITIMES Research, the demand for wafer foundry services in 2024 is unstable, and major wafer foundries have adjusted their capital expenditures downward to regulate the pace of adding new production capacity, with new capacity expansion plans being more conservative than in 2023." "More than half (51%) of senior executives in the semiconductor industry anticipate slowing capital expenditures and deferring investment in research and development in 2024. DIGITIMES Research estimates that chip demand may only stabilize in the latter half of 2024." Many of these prediction are based on expected demands for the chips as the market continues to normalize. 19% of the respondent believe there won't be oversupply issues due to the rapid demand of AI, EV's and emerging applications. The last thing the industry needs is a massive price collapse, so timing is crucial to keep the supply at a healthy level compared to demand. Semiconductor Advanced Packaging News Alert 📢 Intel Corporation is ramping up investment in their advanced packaging technology as they prepare to scale their 18A process. Kevin O'Buckley, the new head of Intel Foundry, spoke about Intel's renewed focus on advanced packaging. In an interview with the EE Times, he explains that the industry can no longer focus solely on scaling transistor features like poly pitch or gate oxide thickness. Instead, the emphasis must shift to the entire system. He mentioned that after joining Intel, he was impressed by the strength of their advanced packaging technologies. These technologies have attracted five of the top ten advanced packaging customers now partnering with Intel Foundry.
