#rant #question about Unreal Lighting Channels: Simply put, why didn’t the devs (Epic) allow for more than three lighting channels for mesh/lights? Also, why not give an option to override lighting channels parameters in sequencer (keying them)? I just really really need just another lighting channel. Give us a field to put in any number to give it an ID, not a checkbox to select among just 3? 🥱

5 Days Editing for 1 Day Shooting seems to be the average for a nicely produced 3-min project with proper color grading, animated gfx, sound design/sweetening, etc...that's my normal Shoot:Edit ratio, too. Alternatively, shooting content all day for several episodes in a series multiplies that ratio accordingly...ditto, for episodes >3 mins. This thread brings up a good point where one client wanted to try something they saw on TV the previous night as the final cut approached. Then, he said the edit could run over a FULL month...I agree. This is a test. Showing the team some "Day for Night" lighting scenarios that transition into "Daylight/Dawn." This was a 2 light set-up (well, technically 3) utilizing some natural light spilling in through the window and a 1200d with a softbox and CTO motivating the outside light and acting as our "daylight." We then added a 300x for fill on shadow side, but being limited on time, we had to make some quick decisions: We had to use 4 stops of ND, as well as a polarizer adding about half a stop, to actually get dark enough to achieve "night," so we found that the 300x was simply not enough light for our subject whenever we had the softbox with silks. We ended up removing our softbox from our 300x and adding a cone with a honeycomb for directional light on the subject. If you pay close attention, you will notice a hard shadow across the subject's chest in "night" AND "day" whenever he raises his hand with the phone. Not as noticeable in the "night" portion, but definitely so in "day." Ideally, we would have wanted to use another 1200d with a softbox and silk or an 8x8 silk on some tallboys for our subject since the cam is stopped down so much, but this was just a test to get us used to the workflow, and we were limited on time and gear. Nonetheless, I feel satisfied where we left this. Now we know what NOT to do. #cinematography #cinematographer #filmmaking
