What's most important is how we do the right thing to protect our customers and employees – which is why adopting Responsible AI policies is so important. There are two interesting and relatively new/emerging revenue models in hardware space. (1) Software Enabled Hardware Hardware is sold at lower but slowly improving gross margins (eg 20-40%), and software recurring revenues layered on top. Software sells at higher margins, enabling blended margins to appear in 50%+ category. These are applied in situations where hardware is not expected to be replaced or greatly improved upon in deployment for a significant number of years to come. Consider your car, or military equipment, or even infrastructure equipment. As always, there are often multiple business/revenue models utilized by different players in the same industry. (2) Hardware As A Service Hardware and software are bundled and sold with annually recurring revenues. Often multi-year contracts are signed to be able to amortize hardware over time, and enable blended gross margins over the length of the contract to be high (approaching 60-75%). This is more common in situations where vendor takes responsibility to upgrade hardware as needed along the way to provide maximum and highest functionality to the customer. Hardware inventory costs are, over time, passed on to suppliers or third party financing parties in lieu of few gross margin points. Consider robots as a service in factories (ala Formic), or AI-enabled equipment (eg Evolv, Lumafield etc). Hardware innovation will require deeper investigation, experimentation, and understanding of business/revenue models to fit customer needs as well as to maximize value for the innovating company. Strong and experienced management teams work hard to minimize sales friction, inventory costs etc, but also maximize gross margins, customer stickiness, and ability to upsell during the life of a contract.

In recent months, we have seen a significant expansion of Large Language Models (LLMs) beyond web-based chatbots and into enterprise-grade formats and applications, indicating progress towards a future where AI seamlessly integrates into our everyday life. As we continue to transition from personal LLM use cases and towards more professional solutions, I see three features as critically important to driving value in the enterprise: interoperability with vertical applications, edge computing, and resource efficiency. Building enterprise generative AI — and winning results and ROI for customers — in a market as loud, confusing, and dynamic as this one requires more than strategy: you need a movement. Ours is built around scaling the three big mountains of generative AI: 1️⃣ Application quality Dumb AI apps are still the norm. From data, to context, to continuous data management, there are problems in generative AI that can get hairier the more capable the models get — it's a not a problem that's going away. 2️⃣ Enterprise adoption AI workflows require deep change adoption – not just tech. And most companies are not answering critical questions for their employees: Why are we doing this? What needs to change?  What skills do we need? 3️⃣ Value realization Having an application in production doesn't guarantee the value realization — there are a lot of entrenched factors that are limiting ROI realization for companies, including long-term contracts with contractors / agencies and the fear of restructuring. This McKinsey article https://lnkd.in/g54TwDzw really resonated with me, as it does a great job describing some of the top use cases that leading telcos are exploring—and some are already starting to deploy. I particularly think leveraging GenAI capabilities for enhancing network operations with better inventory mapping, enabling self-healing via customer sentiment analysis on network problems, and drastically reducing technicians' time to assess, recommend remedies, and automatically initiate work orders are powerful use cases that can create an immediate impact on a telco's opex. The article is also spot on with some other observations: 1. Network operations is a huge area where GenAI can make an impact, but it has to be done in combination with traditional AI solutions. 2. LLMOps is absolutely necessary for model management to ensure the quality and accuracy of model outputs, especially with the pace at which models adapt and change. 3. The idea of a dedicated GenAI innovation lab is important. With new GenAI research and advancements happening so rapidly, organizations could benefit from a dedicated system to build and test solutions, keeping them ahead of the competition. 4. Because GenAI democratizes access to powerful capabilities, it lowers barriers for smaller operators and organizations to become competitive.
