Transactions Without Borders is a book designed for more than just an audience of lawyers and legal scholars. This is an age where the legal profession is finally being forced to think and act like a business, in terms of efficiency, client‐oriented service models, cost‐containment, and over‐ all doing more with less. Executives and business managers who have to work with and manage inside and outside counsel will nonetheless read‐ ily agree that many of the lawyers they work with are still struggling a bit with these concepts. While MBA programs rarely if ever teach business students how to manage attorneys in order to get the maximum benefit out of the attorney‐client relationship, the current economic climate calls for this skill in spades. This book will help businesspeople involved in interna‐ tional operations understand the role their attorneys and other supporting personnel play throughout the process of a transaction in a way that will assist them in getting the most from their legal spend.
Of course, attorneys themselves will also learn a lot from this text. This is true whether we are talking about a small firm lawyer with little previ‐ ous international experience or an attorney who already jets around the globe on behalf of multiple multinational clients. Based on hundreds of hours of one‐on‐one interviews with the author, this text incorporates the experience and practical observations of dozens of transactional counsel, consultants, and executive experts on cross‐border deals from around the world. It is fair to say that virtually any reader will pick up useful insights into a host of topics involved in overseas operations.
