I find it hard to believe that with millions of EVs entering the market and the proliferation of AI compute that PGE is actually going to have excess capacity in 2040 without any additional generation from 3rd parties. I am also curious if there are enough transmission lines and if PGE views that as someone else’s problem. I love stories like Samuel's about how he switched on to the need for the transition and found his pathway to having impact. Each of us has to find their own light switch and their own pathway. Prof Smil is such a troubling figure. Brilliant, charming, persuasive - yet he has used his skills to discourage us from working on what we all understand is a vast and daunting problem. All light switch, no pathway. For decades he propagated the Primary Energy Fallacy - the idea that renewable energy had to replace all "Primary Energy Demand", even though that is not a measure of demand at all: 2/3 of it is lost en route, mainly waste heat from burning coal, oil and gas. We need to provide energy services, we do not need to burn things. And he hasn't devoted 1% of his brilliance to explaining what we *should* do, rather than what we *shouldn't* do. OK, we get it, it's hard to change big systems fast. So where's the Smil plan? Even if we can't stop climate change dead in its tracks, we have to do the best we can. Every 0.1C matters. My light switch was seeing the damage being done to my beloved high mountain environments - glaciers disappearing, historic climbing routes becoming unusable because of rockfall as the permafrost melts. And my pathway was to help people understand in practice solutions - and not just renewables - that *could*, at least in theory, scale fast enough to make a difference. We now have enough manufacturing capacity to replace 5% of global electricity with solar every year. Soon to be 10%. If you put one grain of rice on the first square of the chess board, and two grains on the second square, you may not yet have enough to feed a Prof Smil, but we all know what happens next. #Microsoft 1PointFive, the Direct Air Capture (DAC)-focused subsidiary of energy giant Occidental (Oxy), announced today that it has signed an agreement with Microsoft to deliver 500,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits over six years, marking the largest-ever DAC-based CDR credit purchase agreement. DAC technology, listed by the IEA as a key carbon removal option in the transition to a net-zero energy system, extracts CO2 directly from the atmosphere for use as a raw material or permanently removed when combined with storage. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), scenarios that limit warming to 1.5°C include carbon dioxide removal methods scaling to billions of tons of removal annually over the coming decades, with DAC positioned to potentially account for a significant portion of the total. https://lnkd.in/ddQHe_hb

Data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) illustrates the current "readiness" of #ClimateTechs + their potential impact on carbon reduction. As shown, many techs are at an early stage of being able to have a material impact. Concerningly, some tech funds recently returned capital back to investors recently + closed their funds - citing inability to fund capital intensive techs, found in areas like ClimateTech. This in part may be contributing to the $2 trillion shortfall in ClimateTech, that Deloitte estimates. What this may mean for the future? - The migration of LPs to global, super VC funds within ClimateTech, given the large capital pools needed to fund tech development - Greater specialization from smaller funds, energizing more niche elements of the ClimateTech market - but also altering their / LP's risk profile - A greater role to be played by debt financing in funding growth entities at an earlier stage - impacting cashflow dynamics Will be an interesting space to watch moving forward. Last month in SoCal, geothermal pioneer: Fervo Energy hit a significant milestone as part of their partnership with Edison. They secured 400 megawatts of clean electricity from Earth's heat. That's enough to power 400,000 homes. This reduces reliance on carbon-intensive power plants and also highlights the possibility for geothermal energy to become more widely used worldwide. By adopting oil and gas drilling techniques, Fervo is pioneering horizontal drilling, making #geothermal viable in more locations. This innovation could revolutionize how we meet energy demands while cutting emissions. The US is a leader in using the Earth's heat to make electricity, but geothermal still accounts for less than 0.5% of the electricity generation. Fervo began w/ Google in 2021 to send carbon-free electricity onto the Nevada grid and powered data centers there. The Cape station project in Utah is expected to deliver electricity to CA as early as 2026. As we push towards decarbonization goals, initiatives like this are crucial. Iron-Air technology and emerging alternatives are set to transform multi-day energy storage. On August 13, Form Energy announced the successful pilot of their iron-air battery system, a breakthrough in multi-day energy storage technology. The global energy storage market is facing a critical challenge: how to store renewable energy for extended periods at a low cost. Advancements in materials science and increased investment in research have paved the way for new technologies like iron-air batteries. Iron-air batteries and other electrochemical solutions may be about to ‘pull ahead’ competing technologies to become the go-to solution. #Bezos #100_million The Bezos Earth Fund announced the launch of the AI for Climate and Nature Grand Challenge, with plans to grant up to $100 million to advance AI-based solutions aimed at addressing climate change and nature loss. The Bezos Earth Fund was founded in 2020, with a $10 billion philanthropic commitment from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, aimed at funding scientists, activists, NGOs and others driving solutions to fight climate change and protect nature. The fund has provided over 230 grants to date, allocating approximately $2 billion, and aims to fully disburse the $10 billion pledge by 2030. Jeff Bezos said: “Can modern AI help counter climate change and nature loss, and, if so, how? That’s the question we hope to answer. Underleveraged regions in California face economic isolation, inadequate infrastructure, and housing instability. Low education attainment and high poverty rates are compounded by social inequities that create a talent drain. Despite being home to the largest public higher education system, comprising 150 community colleges and universities, economically underleveraged regions face limited access to quality education and vocational training, resulting in lower educational attainment. The UC system is a powerhouse but has limited reach across the extensive regions comprising underleveraged California, such as the San Joaquin Valley, Inland Empire, Imperial, or the Upper Sacramento Valley. Public-private partnerships can extend the reach and impact of UC-powered startup accelerators by integrating programming into the communities where the solutions will solve California's most pressing problems. Embedding startups in the communities they affect and alongside the industries they serve will catalyze workforce development approaches that include upskilling and reskilling experienced workers to power the growth of these startups. #EconomicGrowth #Innovation #CaliforniaTransformation
