How do you choose between online and offline training for copywriting?
Virtual or in-person - as far as the consumption of educational materials go it’s all personal preference. You can learn however you want. Getting good, however, requires writing everyday, and more importantly, getting regular feedback from an experienced mentor. And when it comes to meeting people and striking up a mentor/mentee relationship, in-person has the undeniable advantage.

How do you use storytelling techniques to engage your audience in your ad copy?
No exaggeration, this is the first step before writing of any kind. Virginia Woolf said, “To know whom to write for is to know how to write.” Get your audience right and the rest falls into place. PhD-level research isn’t always needed, either. A little social media snooping or good old-fashioned empathy goes a long way.

This is where “show, don’t tell” comes in. She didn’t “get annoyed”, she set her jaw and crossed her arms. He didn’t “give up”, he sighed and his shoulders slumped. Takes a few reps (ok, many) to get it, but when you do these little details draw the reader in. I always keep a hard copy of The Emotion Thesaurus within arms reach when I’m typing.

I joined the Army at 17 because I was terrified of college loans and didn't know what I wanted to study. Plus I was tired of the classroom and wanted out of my sleepy hometown of Burnt Hills, NY, so I became a soldier and pushed college off for as long as I could.
I followed in my father's footsteps as an autodidact, devouring anything and everything related to philosophy, literature, history...the basics of a classical education. I followed in my father's footsteps as an autodidact, devouring anything and everything related to philosophy, literature, history...the basics of a classical education. It wasn't by design, I'm just wired that way (thanks dad!), but it worked out well. I'm a decent conversationalist, if nothing else.
I always planned to get my degree "before I retired" [from the Army], but it felt like I blinked and 23 years had gone by, and there I was with no degree, facing retirement.
So I knocked on Norwich's door, who were kind enough to create a degree plan just for Special Operation folks like me. And with 60 days to spare before separation, I met the degree requirements for this beautiful bachelor's degree you see here!

I said I’d always be there for my kids and I meant it.
Every few days I record a video of me talking to my camera, imagining I’m talking to my kids 20-30 years from now.
When I die my kids will get a link to that video library, which is organized and searchable.
What’s in the videos? All kinds of stuff. But mainly the kinds of things I wish I could still talk to my dad about.
The kinds of things I wasn’t ready to talk about until a decade after he passed…I said I’d always be there for my kids and I meant it.

The kinds of things I wasn’t ready to talk about until a decade after he passed.
None of those videos will solve my kids’ problems, help them get up life’s mountains, or avoid life’s swamps.
They’re not Get Out of Jail Free cards or answers to the test, my kids will still have to do the work for themselves.
I like to think of each video as a breadcrumb left by me on the path of life, guiding my kids after I’m gone.
I’m also offering to help others do the same, so if you’re even a little bit interested, have a look at my page at breadcrumbproject.io
