Incredible to see Mosaic in the Financial Times this morning in this excellent piece by Sujeet Indap on tech innovation in private equity. Sujeet's research into the historical evolution of Wall Street's analytical horsepower was particularly fascinating. Though I wasn't around for the shift from pen-and-paper to VisiCalc, I can only imagine the step-function productivity increase it unlocked. Anders' assertion that the advent of the spreadsheet in part drove the LBO boom of the late '80s is also intriguing (although I'm sure the <10% min. equity helped, too). Though the spreadsheet was a great advancement in the '80s, it always baffled me that ~30 years later (when I began my PE career) we were still underwriting billion-dollar buyouts using a generic productivity tool and not an industry-focused application. That's precisely why I started Mosaic. With dedicated platforms like Mosaic and Blackstone's Atlas now powering new deal underwriting - could the industry benefit from a similar step-function productivity increase? Also - an open question to anyone who was working as an investment professional in the 1980s/1990s: was the spreadsheet initially met with hesitation / skepticism by a subset of old-school investors who thought there was value in grinding it out until 3am with only pencil and abacus in hand? We're fortunate at Mosaic to work with some of the world's most forward-thinking investors who readily embrace change - but this sentiment does comes up once in a while. What happens to the holdouts? Great insights shared by Dr. Christopher Haley at Startup Genome on the vital connection between a region's assets and the appropriate accelerator stage. This article underscores how aligning these elements leads to remarkable outcomes in ecosystem development. A great read for all of my friends in ecosystem development. From my personal experience I'll add that misalignment, however, can have long-lasting effects. The relocation of companies from the U.S. to Europe is something the British Emerging Manager Institute (BEMI) is trying to tackle by growing the manager ecosystem. The issue is both depth of capital (# investors), but also the transparency of the market. Many family offices in Europe are hard to reach, for example. This is something to solve over a 10 year horizon, but can be solved. #emergingmanagers #pe #alternatives #vc

Taavet Hinrikus and I made the Financial Times Due Diligence email. https://lnkd.in/ez2AuGQx One 'unintended consequence' is that if there is a 45% tax on carry and CGT (raising £40m per year, remember) it for all intents and purposes closes the door on new VCs in the UK. Especially started by teams from non-traditional backgrounds. To meet the GP commit, you need to be already part of the 'wealthy' as you cannot rely on the value you create - nearly half of it will disappear - to fund it. We have both had extremely successful startups which are few and far between. The smaller number of new VCs will therefore more likely increasingly be for people who have inherited the capital or can draw it from their already rich family. Probably not want they have in mind with this policy.

European VC Fundraising Uptick Germany's KfW Capital, has reported a significant uptick in VC fundraising, indicating a positive trend for startup investments. Jörg Goschin, managing director at KfW Capital, noted that fundraising was sluggish in 2022 and 2023, but things are "steadily improving." He highlighted that KfW Capital examined around 220 funds last year, expecting an even higher number this year. Goschin stated, “I think we can say that the light at the end of the tunnel which we saw last year is getting brighter.” KfW Capital is a prominent limited partner (LP) in various European VC funds, including Germany’s Project A, Earlybird Venture Capital, and France’s Partech. Since its establishment in 2018, KfW Capital has invested in 120 VC funds, with nine funded this year. Goschin also mentioned an increase in capital calls from VCs, which he described as a “reassuring” sign that investments in startups are also on the up. In analyzing the types of funds being considered, KfW Capital found that 50% of the 220 funds were from the ICT sector (SaaS startups, AI, marketplaces, and e-commerce). About a quarter of the funds focused on life sciences, while the remainder were generalist funds without a specific sector focus. Notably, KfW Capital is also witnessing an increase in deeptech funds seeking investment, which Goschin identified as necessary, given the longer development times associated with these types of investments. Gender diversity is a key focus for KfW Capital in its due diligence process, with 46.3% of the funds having at least one female GP in 2023. The firm’s €200 million emerging manager facility, aims to invest in funds with €50 million in AUM that prioritize representation of women and non-binary individuals in leadership roles. Its first investment through this facility was in Nucleus Capital, a deeptech and climate tech VC fund led by GPs Dr. Isabella Fandrych and Maximilian A. Schwarz. In terms of increasing private capital in VC, Goschin highlighted the launch of Germany's €1B Fund of funds last year, which aims to boost investments in German and European VC funds. Beyond equity, there are today too few successful case studies of financing in the CDR space. And when discussing the next financing phase, the term "project finance" seems to be thrown around a little hastily in the CDR space whilst the bankability is not yet proven. That being said, many alternatives exist to bridge the bankability gap. Our latest publication aims to structure the discussion, considering the key strengths, weaknesses and best financing alternatives in each of the CDR removal pathways. 🌏Spotlight on Family Offices: As younger heirs inherit wealth (estimated $84 trillion by 2045), many are aligning investments with values that promote environmental and social progress. But tensions within families are slowing a full-scale shift, with most family offices taking slow, very deliberate steps rather than committing entirely to impact. According to the UBS 2024 Global Family Wealth report, which surveyed 230 global FO clients with an average net worth of $2.6 billion and $600 billion in collective assets, here’s where we stand: 🔶Climate #inflection point: Just 12% of family offices see climate change as a top risk by early next year, with geopolitical tensions, inflation, and real estate corrections taking precedence. However, nearly half expect climate to become a major concern within five years. 🔶Allocations are incremental: Family offices, especially the largest and more sophisticated, are exploring impact by “carving out” portions of portfolios or even carving out by asset class. Rather than 100% impact, many allocate x percent to key areas, from climate-focused ventures to healthcare and education. 🔶Intergenerational dynamics: there’s a lot of friction within the family on allocating significant portions of the portfolio: #nextgen heirs are often eager for impact, are open to experimenting and call their wealth advisor for help; while established family members may prefer traditional strategies. Families are leaning in to get educated and to slowly bridge. 🔶There's a desire to support emerging managers, but the reality is that it's still uncommon. One of the issues is scale., and "whether you are evaluating an investment for a fund that is raising $50 million or a fund that is raising $1 billion, the effort of doing that [due diligence] is the same." Startups in the digital health space have pushed forward the accessibility and availability of so many types of care—from mental health, to fertility, to prenatal care and home health. They’ll be closely watching any changes to reimbursement and policies for Medicaid and Medicare, as well as any changes to insurance mandates or compliance expectations.
