Analysis: Key technical leader departs OpenAI Ilya Sutskever, really is the brains behind the whole operation. Chief Scientist, board member and co-founder.. This happened two days after, the hype announcement of GPT-4o. With both Andrej Karpathy & Ilya Sutskever leaving within the last few months, this leaves a rather large technical gap in the leadership team of the Research Lab. The GPT-4o announcement happening 1 day before 'Google I/O 2024', largely overshadowing the event. Personally I think this is good for Microsoft, its stock is up 8% this month, to put that in perspective - 250 billion USD, or 5 and half Twitters!! Previously OpenAI actively attempted to remove all emotions from their AI, recent audio demos of the new speech model seems to be going in the other direction using science fiction as a product roadmap. The curious change is rather sudden and may be explained by Mustafa Suleyman recently becoming the CEO of Microsoft AI Mustafa Suleyman previously CEO of Inflection AI was creating an emotionally aware chatbot called 'Pi'. 1 day ago 'John Schulman' one of the remaining technical co-founders of OpenAI, was the guest of a well known AI podcast, this appearance seems genuine and not a PR effort - https://lnkd.in/gEcrvmvU Big changes in the AI world, remember OpenAI is a Research Lab first and foremost - with many of the founding researchers departing within a few months, sending an interesting market signal. An interesting update from one of the stalwarts of the cybersecurity industry, Check Point Software. Tellingly, with at 30 years at the helm, Gil Shwed is the longest-tenured CEO on Nasdaq. This will be an exciting experiment to put a VC and founder (who is an investor and chair of 17 startup companies). Enterprises spend more on security but aren’t benefitting from the extra spend. Palo Alto Networks’ customers who buy security across 3 platforms spend more than 40x those that secure just one. Despite those dollars… “Adding incremental point products is not necessarily driving a better security outcome for them.” - Nikesh Arora, CEO of Palo Alto Networks The average enterprise uses upwards of 70 security products. Many of these products produce alerts identifying phishing emails or network access issues or odd device behavior. The security operations center (SOC) reviews these alerts. Estimates suggest the typical team receives between 5,000 & 11,000 alerts per day - every day. Worse still, every SOC team is short-staffed. No wonder these teams can’t keep up with the deluge. Fewer than 10% of alerts are ever reviewed. Many security breaches could have been detected earlier with broader coverage. Apple’s Private Cloud Compute and the business of privacy With Private Cloud Compute, Apple has gone to extraordinary lengths to safeguard user privacy with AI-related tasks. In doing so, Apple has surely also incurred an extraordinary expense. How can Apple justify the cost of providing PCC if it doesn’t directly monetize its Apple Intelligence features? Either through the improved brand perception captured in a broader privacy narrative or by monetizing PCC with other non-AI use cases. While the narrative explanation is clear, the more interesting theory about Apple’s motivation in building PCC is that it can be expanded to other use cases that can be directly monetized. The first alternative use case that springs to mind is advertising attribution. PCC sounds conceptually similar to a data clean room, albeit far more sophisticated than most implementations, which merely use IP addresses and other identifiers to match publisher-observed ad interactions with advertiser-observed conversions. While the PCC nodes seem hardware-optimized for processing AI-related tasks, other nodes could be built that aren’t.

The July 25th Open-Source LLaMA 3.1 release deserves attention, especially to the investors of close source LLM models. 3 model sizes of 8B, 70B and 405B parameters enables edge to datacenter usage. Expanded context windows to 128k tokens supports much large prompt and multilingual support. The 405B parameter model competes well with GPT-4 and Claude 3.5 and is integrated with various cloud platforms. The LLaMA model can be fine-tuned and adapted for specific tasks without full retraining with techniques like LoRA as full retraining requires 2048 A100 GPUs for 21 days (estimate). The hardware costs alone for the training could reach tens of millions of dollars (painful to VCs) so efficient alternatives to full retraining is key to AI startups leveraging LLaMA. The approaches are growing, but include LoRA, 8-bit precision to reduce memory footprint and fine-tuning on specific datasets or tasks. Why did Meta open-source LLaMA? Meta aims to disrupt the competitive edge of companies with proprietary models such as Google and OpenAI. The traditional open-sourcing benefits of building a large developer base, fostering innovation and adoption. It also helps Meta attract and retain top AI researchers who prefer working with open and accessible technologies. Likely, Meta will offer managed services with specialized hardware in the future.

I like this idea of "technical taste". It gets into where software engineering is as much creative art as it is science. Four great takeaways (IMHO) for software devs in this era in particular: 1. Aspiring engineers should cultivate a sense of curiosity, experiment with different tools and technologies, and embrace a mindset of continuous learning. 2. AI has the potential to streamline processes and enhance productivity for engineers, but it may also lead to disruptions in traditional software development workflows. 3. Developing technical taste and judgment is essential for making informed decisions about which technologies and approaches to pursue. 4. Collaboration and open-mindedness are key to leveraging the full potential of AI and staying ahead of technological advancements. I also really liked these two quotes from Sam Schillace: 1. "The right time to do something is when you have that feeling in the pit of your stomach that's like, 'oh, this is a great idea and it's going to suck to build because nothing's ready yet.'" 2. "Technical taste is like, 'how well have you consolidated that set of experiences and heuristics into judgment that you can apply accurately when you see new things?'" 3. "It may be the case that very small teams can do very large projects, or like we were talking about before, it may be the case we're just going to get really ambitious about what we try to do with the same size of teams, which is kind of where I would put my money."
