Great compilation of resources! These are definitely some of the best materials out there for prepping for tech interviews. I've personally found the "System Design Interview" books to be incredibly helpful for grasping complex design principles. Also, "Neetcode" has a great collection of problem solutions that are super handy for quick review sessions. One resource I'd add to the list is "The Pragmatic Programmer" book. It's not directly interview-focused, but it provides invaluable insights into software development that can help deepen your understanding and improve your problem-solving skills. For behavioral interviews, practicing the STAR method with real-life examples from your experience can be a game-changer. It's all about storytelling and demonstrating your impact. State of the Frontend in 2024! https://lnkd.in/gQ9-YwMS TL;DR: 1. React and Next.js are here to stay. 2. Redux and Redux Toolkit is still kinda popular. 3. Vercel, Github Actions, Node.js , Typescript and Tailwind css lead in their spaces. 4. GraphQL is waning in popularity 5. Dedicated QA teams are shrinking, devs expand their roles further into testing. 6. ChatGPT and Copilot are popular choices for AI tools, but Sonnet 3.5 is viewed as a better code generation model. Curious to see how much of a spike Cursor (uses Sonnet 3.5) will enjoy! These are just some items that really caught my attention, more details in the report...

Really excited to share I'll be delivering a talk "Starting from nothing" at StaffPlus in New York on September 4th 2024. Staff engineers make for an excellent advance party, someone you give a problem like “build a new product” and know they’ll turn that ask into an actionable plan, eventually releasing something great. Sounds great, right? Well, not exactly. You may be the first to scope out the project, but you’ll need to build a team to help you deliver on it. Once you have a team you’ll need a vision that can excite and inspire them, as it’s unlikely you’ll deliver the quality of outcome within the timelines needed without one. Complicating things, it’s probably a poor choice for you to take an ‘official’ leadership position within a team: you’ll need to steer, support and drive the team all from within. I've spent years being this person, helping lead company initiatives at GoCardless and then at incident.io, the most recent example being our On-call product. This talk will share some of the tough lessons learned I've learned along the way. Whether you're tackling your first big project or leading your tenth, you'll leave with strategies that might save you some sleep. Look forward to seeing you there! LeadDev

I worked on a Temporal tutorial today: https://lnkd.in/gMj78jME Temporal is a platform to help take some of the complexity away from building orchestration in distributed systems. It’s very interesting to me. In my mind the most important problem this solves is making it easier to do the right thing. Setting up things like queues, retries, and timeouts can take some time, effort, and care to set up. If many of these things are taken care of automatically my orchestrated workflow will end up being resilient with less effort. If not Temporal, I’d at least make sure you are using an SDK that makes it easy to consider distributed system failure modes. Rather than lectures, this course is active and engaging, using the case study method and rigorous discussion to support learning.

Thinking of transitioning your software engineering team to a new technology, library, or tool? The "big bang" approach of ripping everything out and starting fresh can be tempting but taking an incremental approach often brings major benefits. Here’s why gradual transitions can work well: by using the new technology in all new development first, your team can learn its strengths and quirks over time without risking major disruptions. Plus if something’s already working well, there’s no need to touch it and that can save a ton of work. This is an often-overlooked advantage when planning upgrades. Of course, there are cases where two technologies aren’t compatible and a gradual switch isn’t possible. But in my experience I've often seen a phased approach leads to smoother transitions, fewer issues, and a stronger foundation for long-term success. What has worked best for your development teams when planning and executing on upgrades?

Observation: 9/10 SWE's quit at “reading the docs”. Cut through the BS with this easy trick: Take action and build. Writing code is 100x easier than the docs make it sound. “Reading the docs” gave me crazy imposter syndrome: -Git -WPF -Kafka -OAuth -Angular -GraphQL -RabbitMQ -Kubernetes In ALL cases, I conquered my fears by building. Except for WPF. I gave up on that. And Kafka, that's for another day. Forcing yourself to build/code/deploy melts analysis paralysis. Then you'll say "oh that was pretty easy". Trust me, we aren't building rockets. Practice AND Study build true mastery.

6 weeks. Well, technically a little under but who's counting? That's how long we had to create this MVP. 8 developers, 1 leader; a group of people who had never worked with React Native before. All voluntarily working on this project. We did it. We met our MVP goals we established and created a mobile app with a fully functioning front and back end. I could not be more proud of the work we did. 🚀 Meta just released Llama 3.3 70B with some exciting updates: 128K context, multilingual capabilities, and enhanced tool calling. It’s reported to outperform Llama 3.1 70B and even compares favorably to Llama 405B! 🎉 But let’s not jump to conclusions—these broad generalizations can be misleading. 🤔 Here are a few critical questions to consider: - Which models does it NOT outperform? (For instance, Qwen seems to be missing from comparisons.) - On which benchmarks did it struggle or show deterioration? I’d love to hear your insights, thoughts, or comments. Options in a start up are often referred to as paper money, a lottery ticket, or otherwise suggesting a lack not just of liquidity but of worth. Through the last three startups I've gotten my value back. One was an ESOP (shares repurchased over time), one was fully sold (traditional m&a), and one was a buy back. Point being, my view is skewed the opposite way to see significant value in options. How do you view and value options in a start up?

A new Jepsen report from Kyle Kingsbury looking at the Kafka-compatible Buf: https://lnkd.in/gijxaHzr It includes broader findings about the Kafka protocol and implementation too: "We also characterize four issues related to Kafka more generally, including the lack of authoritative documentation for transaction semantics, a deadlock in the official Java client, and write loss, aborted read, and torn transactions caused by the lack of message ordering constraints in the Kafka transaction protocol. These issues affect Kafka, Bufstream, and (presumably) other Kafka-compatible systems, and remain unresolved."

This clip is living proof of where the Generative Video Models are going with content creation and it's potential in the domain. I feel bad for the those who make a living off the entertainment industry. Imagine the next generation Hollywood movies entirely generated by AI, scripted by AI and personified by AI. We are in a whole new era of revolution. #AI

ruby-lsp is a solid extension to use with vscode. I spent some time today with it debugging a couple of complex issues and I was able to dig deep into our dependency tree easily without having to manually search for things. Definitely give it a shot if you're using #ruby #rubyonrails.
