GEE Group assembled quite the trio to get their thoughts on the current state of the contingent labor landscape. Angela Westhead, CCWP, Ashley Wilson, CCWP, and John Healy moderated by Clint Hawkins brought some fantastic insights to the table - and I hope the parties don't mind I share what resonated with me (feel free to refute anything I got wrong!): 𝗕𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘁: Vendor neutrality helped to broaden the candidate pool initially but that is less of a concern these days. Enterprises need to curate a group of known suppliers and work with them for their talent needs. 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: Important but only tell part of the story. Rest of the story is the intangibles of the business -- partnerships, learning the client business. The data is table stakes to evidence success or areas for improvement. But business is people and a B2B relationship relies on people and a mutual understanding of goals. "𝗜 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱": No, you need a person that is hoping to support their family. Return the dignity to the talent acquisition process. This includes using the proper terminology and treating contingent workers as people that want to contribute to the same goals as employees - and as people that don't want to be called "temps." 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲/𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀: There is a different business approaches to fill different skillsets. Avoid the race to the bottom in all regards. 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀: Resume and skill-matching shows bias with AI tools. Recruiters can connect on a more human level to detect a connection -- similar to dating! Let AI take the tedious tasks such as calendar scheduling but leave the ones that require the human touch to be optimized. 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝘁: Match- the technical skills. Are they qualified or not? Fit - where you are in life? Do your goals align with the mission and values of the business 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘁: A strong process in this regard could remove 2 weeks from the sourcing process. Let's get logical and find a solution that can satisfy all corporate checkboxes. Additionally, treating people with respect and kindness, the way you would like to be treated, fosters trust and positive relationships within your team. We co-create safety one authentic conversation at a time. Whilst in PPWD's role of partnering safety-critical organisations and teams, I get to see the results of our programmes in terms of #ROI and reductions in adverse events, we rarely see and hear about the individual wins we help create. And so, it was great to hear from our facilitator, Mark Phillips, today. Two months ago, he delivered a workshop to trainee drivers with Southeastern Railway, and yesterday some trainee drivers from that workshop came up to him and thanked him for the best sleep of their lives. As they spoke to Mark other trainee drivers came over to echo this. All had taken different hints and tips away, yet all are actively managing their sleep – and all are optimising bedtimes to maximise sleep duration. Hearing real-world confirmation of the benefits of the sleep and pressure/stress sessions is brilliant, and this feedback was echoed by Paul Ratnage who added that, when he asked what new delegates knew about the course, one said “It taught my friend how to sleep well.” I will be at the EHS Congress, Berlin, 21-23 May with the Tim Artus, Mark Lovatt and Colin Litherland (still not on LinkedIn!), so stop by and let's talk about how to make a real difference to the people in your safety-critical teams.
