This article provides a helpful summary of the changes to Section 504 and the ADA and when these new updates will come into effect. The biggest change is that these laws are adopting the WCAG 2.1 AA standard. Pausing to summarize what you’ve just learned .. from a cognitive processing lens, this enhances learning for a few reasons. This study showed that it was more effective over drawing however Dave M. suggests content mapping (over just drawing) combined with summarizing may enhance processing even further. I agree with this as long as a template is provided to support the learner during this process. How to summarize may also need to be explicitly taught in some cases. Yet another example of how you don’t need fancy or flashy tools , graphics or even complex gaming to “trick” people into learning; you need strategy and a deep understanding of the science behind HOW people learn. Excellent insights. The most important one I see missing, which Higher Ed seems very slow to appreciate, is that the days of traditional hierarchical management and strategic planning are over. Those approaches have become recipes for obsolescence. Change in technology and industry have accelerated to such a pace that even very large companies and services can be disrupted into extinction within a few years or even months. Higher Ed is not known for its nimbleness, but it has improved over the last decade to become more data-driven and responsive. Although admirable, these improvements have been far outpaced by the acceleration of change. We are very far behind. Getting ahead will require top-level leaders to get out of the conference room and onto the front-lines--routinely talking with faculty and staff to help them interpret the signs of change they're seeing. They'll also need to ask industry partners and advisory boards to help refocus more energy on predicting needs that are coming, rather than those we see right now. In the business world, the most effective leaders are mobilizing these strategies by actively mining regular feedback from customer service representatives and clients, as well as leveraging AI to monitor for converging trends in patent libraries to predict the disruptive changes of tomorrow. This proactive approach enables them to start pivoting in advance of the change. We have reached the point at which, by the time new disruptions emerge, it is too late. Most institutions are simply too complex and cumbersome to pivot in time. I sincerely hope Higher Ed leaders are prepared for this new reality. Working against them is a long tradition of imitating one's competitors and doubling down on cherished practices, assuming societal and technological change do not affect the underlying value of what we do. While true, those changes will radically affect the cost and market for what we offer, so we may end up the trustees of a precious product very few people can actually afford--in time, money, or convenience--to enjoy. As a first-generation college student who believes deeply in the transformative power of education, I would like very much to see us adapt in ways that maximize access and quality in what we offer, and I believe the world needs our worthy endeavors more than the current age of convenience, novelty, polarization, and reductive credentialing realizes.

This new article examines digital accessibility in higher education by conducting interviews. It highlights how higher education relies on digital accessibility champions to raise awareness about best practices. Yet, many departments are siloed so that only extends so far. Institutions focus on remediating inaccessible content rather than implementing processes to ensure new content is accessible. For all those predicating a skills-based future, in which online platforms, apprenticeships, bootcamps, and self-guided courses deliver marketable competencies to willing learners, all of which validated by a mixed bag of alternative credentials like nanocertificates, digital chips, and microbadges... this The Chronicle of Higher Education article provides an interesting counter-argument. If such a scenario plays out, as #edtech CEOs and corporate #CLOs and their advisors believe.... people will start thinking about themselves in terms of skills, which translates to projects, roles, and opportunities. Perhaps. But wait a moment.... really? "We have moved well past the banal 20th-century idea of education as an investment that should generate a return. No, these ed-tech reformers are doing something very different and altogether more interesting. They are pushing beyond education-as-investment to education-as-collateralization. By turning education into a content-free, artificial-intelligence-generated performance, skills can be detached from individual, embodied human beings and turned into pure commodities." Maybe neither side is right, maybe there is no "ultimate truth". But for that to be the case.... institutions of higher-education must start to play an active role in deciding what education system they want, and implementing it.
