How can you create a safe space for team members to share their vulnerabilities?
Carefully sharing your own vulnerabilities is one way to show you are not aloof, insouciant or prescriptive. And that sounds to me like good leadership. By letting team members know you have your skin in the game, you are communicating that (1) none is immune to vulnerabilities, (2) you are authentic, (3) you are not better-than-thou, (4) you have the capacity to empathize with individual team members, and (5) you truly care about the team as a whole, and will do all in your power to ensure its inclusive success. I belong to the school of thought that espouses strategic vulnerability (intentional emotional exposure) as an attractive trait in leadership. That's why I practice it.

What are the best strategies for people of color to get promoted in predominantly white companies?
It is important to ceaselessly but carefully project the value you create in the organization. The reason is simply that employers tend to think in terms of the value employees create, and how it improves the fortunes of the organization. So, don't just work hard and smart. Make sure you are viewed as an asset, without appearing like a showboat. One of the many ways to do this is to earn the recognition of professional organizations and peers, thus showing a wider appreciation of your value (and expertise). Sometimes, credible awards can speak louder than promotion requests.

How can you implement a successful diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy?
Self-evaluation is very important but so also is evaluation by stakeholders (like ERG members, organized identity groups, etc). Being in the "trenches" and wearing the hat of lived experiences, they can sometimes see what isn't too obvious. So, did you recently host an expungement workshop, implicit bias conversation or inclusive leadership training? Ask for feedback from participants. Get them to evaluate the presenters. Also ask for suggestions on how to improve such events.
