Nonfiction authors often worry whether they'll have sufficient platform to interest an agent or publisher, and if their marketing plan will be impressive enough. Sometimes that worry is premature if you don't have a well-defined readership. If the readership is wobbly or misaligned with the rest of the proposal, then the marketing plan will be trying to reach the wrong set of people. More from me below.

A smart book editor (who I’m lucky to call my own) told me something in conversation yesterday that stuck: “Give readers what they WANT - slip in what it is they NEED.” For self-help and practical nonfiction authors, it’s a great way to approach the daunting exercise of landing on the right book title, and presenting your book to agents, publishers, and readers alike. Aspiring authors believe the destination (of a book deal) is the goal. Margins and Layout are Fundamental - Thoughtful margins and layout enhance the book’s visual appeal and readability.
