The DoD CIO is excited to announce the CMMC 32 CFR program rule was released for public inspection today and is expected to be published on Tuesday 15 Oct. This rule streamlines and simplifies the process for small- and medium-sized businesses by reducing the number of assessment levels from the five in the original program to three under the new program. Companies may use cloud service offerings to meet the cybersecurity requirements that must be assessed as part of the CMMC requirement. The DoD CIO would like to thank all the businesses and industry associations that provided input during the public comment period. Improving the cybersecurity of the defense industrial base (DIB) is essential to protecting the products of American ingenuity and the national security information that supports and enables our warfighters. Your input improved the rule and will help improve security of critical information while making it easier for small- and medium-sized businesses to meet their contractual obligations. HPCMP teamed up with the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and industry partners to increase the DoD’s computing power and flexibility through cloud computing. We worked with DIU to identify vendors that could link our HPCs with cloud-based resources to serve as surge capacity and provide access to resources for specialized workloads. DIU awarded two prototype agreements under HPCMP and both vendors have succeeded in putting supercomputing in the cloud and aim to expand the DoD’s HPC resources by integrating cloud-based assets into the DoD Supercomputing Resource Centers (DSRCs). The vendors showed that their solutions increase computing power at the DSRCs without significant increases in hardware costs or requirements. The solutions work together to integrate the Centers and multiple cloud service providers into a robust network offering a range of HPC capabilities in one ecosystem. “This capability allows the HPCMP to securely combine the capacity and capability of DoD HPCMP Defense Supercomputing Resource Centers (DSRCs), with the flexibility and diverse hardware associated with commercial cloud providers in order to create a seamless ecosystem for DoD researchers,” said Dr. Benjamin Parsons, ERDC DSRC Director and previously HPCMP’s Chief Technology Officer. “Researchers are [now] able to access cloud resources when appropriate to augment their work at on-premises centers. This has given them access to a wider variety of hardware, and the ability to scale resources beyond what is currently possible, all within one secure, easy to use, environment. “The HPCMP is looking forward to providing this capability to our DoD partners to further enhance our HPC compute and data analytics capabilities. These capabilities are essential to meeting the needs of the DoD scientific and technology, test and evaluation, and acquisition communities who are key to supporting the warfighters across the globe,” Parsons said.
