Too many times in my career I have experienced the traditional project planning and management approach result in frustrated project teams and frustrated leadership. Consider a change of mindset and bold approach that requires trust, elimination of fear and transparency. I’ve found a few key mindset shifts can produce big shifts in team attitude and behavior. 1. Commit as a team to finish the project as quickly as possible. Commit to speed, not to completion dates. 2. Set goals for completion dates with a clear mission driven why! The why needs to be crystal clear. 3. Negotiate the strategy to achieve the goal, not the amount of time it will take. The strategy can change to meet the goal. 4. Set the expectation of a dynamic, flexible and agile plan. Don’t be afraid to change, pivot, and renegotiate the strategy. 5. Motivate through mission and purpose, a unifying common ground, not fear. Intuitive is doing it again. If you are in medical device, you are currently witnessing the first medtech company who is positioning themselves as a lifestyle brand. Intuitive Returning from SAGES this past week, it is clear that the team at Intuitive is executing on playbooks that were written by Apple and Steve Jobs and taken even further by Tesla and Elon Musk. If you attended SAGES, you saw it first hand and may not have realized it. Now that it is called out, you know. The new form factor of D5, the clear attention to the industrial design factors, the finishes.......seems Apple-like. Go to the Intuitive LinkedIn page and view their postings from the last week: - Dave Rosa's "What is Belief?" pic - The video from SAGES of "Transforming Surgery Together Again" - The Intuitive gamer headset on a customer The Intuitive website alongside the Tesla and Apple websites, have very similar vibes. Creating a visceral connection and taking a product to the level of a surgeons lifestyle creates legions of deep connections for the products to follow. You become part of a family, tribe, a community, a subculture. And now that I showed you, you will see it everywhere :) Well done Intuitive.

A case for using a simulation to train engineers and technicians for industrial needs in the medical device field, or for that matter in any field. Here is a typical job requirement for the post of a manufacturing engineer in a medical device company. "Perform continuous improvements and ongoing support of existing manufacturing lines and process/product development lifecycle. Navigate the complexities of government and industry regulations to include ISO13485 and cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practices). Assist in the launching of new products and processes from concept to final release in manufacturing. Utilize DOE (Design of Experiment), QSR (Quality Systems Regulations), and IQ/OQ/PQ (Installation Qualification, Operational Qualification, Performance Qualification). Understand Risk-based failure mode analysis (PFMEA and PFMECA). Conduct Data Analysis using SPC (Statistical Process Control) principles and Minitab. Coordinate small to medium scale projects, coordinating activities, resources, and project timelines. Utilize Lean and Six Sigma practices to include DMAIC processes and root cause analysis, 5S, scrap reduction and yield improvements. Coordinate various CAPA (Corrective Action /Preventative Action) projects. Supporting software projects to include Microsoft Project." However, it all boils down to one area. The product being manufactured and the equipment which is used to manufacture it. My approach to training would be to first build a model in RoboDK or any other available simulator. Then use the model to train the engineers in BOK (Body of Knowledge) Jobs are plenty in medical devices but one has to get their foot in the door. One wonders where they could get the experience. I believe simulation is the way. If you would like to try this method get in touch with me and we will work out a game plan. This is purely not for profit and no cost involved. Keep your eyes on that middle boat. For many of us, this was our first time competing in the dragon boat festival in Denver on behalf of #medtronic. Our first race in the morning was excellent. The second we were not prepared as well as we would have liked, and had our worst time. This video is from the finals for our division, where we took first place. The effort you see from that middle boat is the culmination of lessons learned, resilience, and being in sync with your teammates. We fell behind our target early in the race, but dug deep and synchronized our strokes. The oars plunged deep into the water. The boat surged forward with 20 women and men hinging in unison and putting everything they had into the oars. Our flag catcher reached for the flag, precariously gliding over the waters of Sloan’s Lake. We had a diverse group of women and men from all over the organization, including different operating units, teams, roles, and physical abilities. Young and not young, experienced and inexperienced, individual contributors and managers. We all had the same goal. So how does this fit on LinkedIn? A dragon boat is program management. The flag is the new product we need to launch for our patients. The oars are all the tasks that enable the product to be released safely and effectively. The beat of the drum is the timeline, the reminder of the pace we must set to get to the end. The chants of “dig” and “up” are the program managers giving direction to the team. The counting of the strokes is the program managers synchronizing the team. The rowers are the individuals who are driving everything they’ve got into the program to propel us forward to get to our goal. The come from behind is the resilience that no matter what the delay, we can overcome it if we move forward as a team. No one person can be out of synch, or put in marginal effort. I’m incredibly honored to be a part of this group. We didn’t give up. We had each other’s backs (literally). We gave and received clear feedback without any ego. And I have to admit, it feels awesome to win. #medtronic #medtronicemployee #teamwork #programmanagement

Blue Arbor Technologies, Inc. has just received #FDA breakthrough device designation for its Restore neuromuscular interface system 🧠 The FDA has also accepted the system into its Total Product Life Cycle (TPLC) Advisory Program (TAP) Pilot. 💪 The Michigan-based team designed its "Restore" system to integrate into the peripheral nervous system alongside robotic prosthetics seamlessly. 🤖 They want to restore naturalistic hand and arm function for patients with upper limb loss. With their platform, patients could potentially manoeuvre upper limb prosthetic devices with enhanced dexterity, speed, and reliability. 👏 It features implantable intramuscular electrodes, a sensing unit, a socket-mounted receiver, and a comprehensive software package. The sensing unit filters, conditions, and processes patient-generated electromyographic (EMG) signals, transmitting them wirelessly to a socket-mounted receiver. From there, the receiver decodes the signals into precise movement commands for the prosthesis, all controlled by the software. 💻 President of Blue Arbor Paul S. Cederna, MD, FACS said: “Blue Arbor Technologies is dedicated to developing solutions that address the unmet need for improved robotic prosthetic control options for people with limb loss so they can more easily integrate a prosthesis in their daily lives and return to normality,” “The breakthrough designation and TAP enrollment is a valuable step in the pathway to FDA market clearance.
