Recession? It is already here. One of the reasons I have been traveling so much is I wanted to hear from people on the ground about how the economies in their areas were doing. I monitor numerous media outlets and all are vacillating what the Federal Reserve will do in the United States, what other governments will do to stimulate their economies, and if there will be a “soft landing” or we will go into full recession. I am sorry to report that regardless of what anyone says, the world is already in trouble and there is no rebound in sight anytime soon. The bulk of our customers have cut back on their orders and there are more huge corporate layoffs coming. What does that mean for us and you? The good news is that we have been through this multiple times since 1924 and we have already taken steps to safeguard our finances and prepare for a 1-2 year (at least) global decline. Can that change? Of course, if there are God forbid regional conflicts, or worse, a world war. Other scenarios include fuel reserves being destroyed, energy grids attacked, civil unrest, nuclear attacks and revolutions. However, these are potential disasters which we face when times are also good, so we have to play the odds that the world will hold itself together and this cycle will play out. So what do you do in the meantime? There is no magic. The best defense is reduce or eliminate debt, also reduce overhead, increase efficiency, and do more with less while hunkering down to weather the storm. If you can effectively navigate this terrain, your competitors will probably start to go out of business and your market share can go up. It can be a boom time for you personally and your company if you have the holding power to be one of the last standing. Times are going to get tougher before they get better and for those who have never been through it before, they will be hardened to a new reality. It will be a very difficult but for those who survive, prosperity will be at the end. Waiting to act is probably not in your best interest but will serve your competitors. Best of luck as you navigate the rapids of uncertainty.
