It's shocking how many PR pros overlook this: Translating press materials and media pitches into languages other than English in diverse markets. For instance, your chances of securing press coverage in Spanish-language newspapers and TV in Miami—where 72% of the population is Hispanic—are significantly higher if you correspond with journalists and provide them with everything in Spanish. Pro tip: Consider the Spanish-speaking audience when filming your b-roll video interviews too. P.S. My Spanish skills are far from fluent. Insightful opinion piece by Ana Valdez for The Latino Newsletter about two interconnected truths that resonates especially if you have worked in advertising and marketing to the Latinx/e community: 1️⃣ U.S. Latinos come from diverse backgrounds that inform their worldviews and voting decisions. What resonates with conservative Mexican Americans in Texas, Cubans, and Venezuelans may not resonate with the Mexican American community in the West. 2️⃣ Latinos are Americans. We care about many of the same issues as other Americans, but we are unique as our backgrounds are also multicultural. We are 200%: 100% Americans and 100% Latinos. I will add a third line which is country of origin matters coupled with generational points of view formed by lived experiences and individual classism. Local journalism is in a state of constant evolution, facing both exciting opportunities and significant challenges. As an editor at a local newspaper, I’ve witnessed firsthand how shifts in technology and audience behavior are reshaping our industry—and how vital our role remains in serving our communities. Trends: With digital platforms taking precedence, we’ve adapted to engage readers in new ways, from interactive online stories to social media-driven news. However, one trend that stands out is the renewed focus on hyperlocal content. Readers want to know what’s happening in their neighborhoods, from school board decisions to small business growth. Challenges: Yet, this shift brings its own challenges. Many local news outlets face declining revenues and shrinking staffs. The challenge lies in balancing quality journalism with limited resources, all while competing with the rapid pace of digital content consumption. But even with these hurdles, the value of trustworthy, local reporting has never been clearer. Successes: Despite the obstacles, local journalism continues to make a difference. Just recently, our paper’s coverage of the local humane society's role in animal welfare sparked community discussions and led to meaningful change. It’s moments like these that remind me of the powerful role we play in keeping our communities informed, connected, and accountable. At its heart, local journalism is about more than just reporting news—it's about telling the stories that define who we are. As we navigate these changes, I remain committed to providing a platform for those voices and ensuring that, no matter how the industry evolves, our community is always at the center of the conversation. Last week, approximately 400 participants from around the world converged in DC to discuss the state of communications, to hear opposing and affirmative views, and to experience what it’s like to be on Capitol Hill two weeks before the election.    Here are three quick reflections on PRovoke Media’s Global Summit:  ❇️ Curate what matters to you the most: With a vibrant lineup of panelists like Mike Allen/Axios, Kathy Baird/Washington Post, Denise Dahlhoff/The Conference Board, Megan Doern/Deloitte, Nicki Haley, Kara Swisher, and others, there was a lot to take in. As usual, PRovoke has done a great job reporting on the Summit (check out their website.) These are the quotes that stuck with me (some paraphrased):  💬 "You don’t create a great product if you don’t have more points of view." 💬 "We have a lot of information but not a lot of facts. The purveyors of the main social networks have backed away from any moderation, and we are seeing the decline of media outlets that were much more stringent about facts.” 💬 "Regardless of what happens on election day, don't be quick to put anything out, don't be quick to respond because you won't know if it's real and you don't know exactly who's behind it. Make sure we're not contributing to any of that division.” 💬 "We need to be relentless. We need to wake up every single day and continue trying.” 💬 "I do think that the old quote, what gets measured gets managed, is still very true." 💬 “Process is such a critical thing to communicate quickly.” ❇️ Cherish the in-person moments: Many of us find industry conferences and events valuable because they give us the chance to reconnect with old colleagues and meet new people. Steve Kerns and I definitely accomplished this. It was also good to catch up with some of the good folks at PRovoke Media. ❇️ AI: don’t be lazy, and don’t get seduced. As expected, #AI was a significant topic of discussion at the Summit.  There is still much to be comprehended and navigated. Some of the AI-related sessions reminded me of what Jeremy Kahn, Fortune magazine’s AI editor said during one of his recent podcasts: “One of the things I’m concerned about is that this technology is so easy to use and so seductive that we’ll overuse it and, as a result, lose some of our important cognitive abilities.” We must be thoughtful and proceed with caution.    Thank you again to the PRovoke Media team for all their hard work.
