🚨 Breaking News: California Affirms Climate Disclosure Deadlines On September 27, 2024, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 219 (SB 219) into law, amending the landmark climate disclosure laws SB 253 and SB 261. Here's what consumer brands need to know: 1️⃣ Reporting deadlines remain unchanged: First disclosures for Scopes 1 and 2 emissions are still due in 2026, with Scope 3 emissions in 2027. 2️⃣ Extended rulemaking: The California Air Resources Board (CARB) now has until July 1, 2025, to adopt implementing regulations – a 6-month extension. 3️⃣ Consolidated reporting allowed: Companies can now report at the parent company level for SB 253 emissions disclosures. 4️⃣ Flexible Scope 3 timeline: CARB has discretion to specify the 2027 deadline for Scope 3 emissions disclosure. 5️⃣ Fee requirement removed: The annual filing fee for reports has been eliminated. Does your company do business in California? You may be affected by California’s Climate Accountability Package. As early as 2026, companies doing business in California may be required to follow new, stringent GHG reporting standards. 🌱Legislation aligning with EcoClaim's mission highlights why software like TRAX is essential for measuring, managing and reducing GhG emissions. 🌏California's New Climate Laws: Ensuring Corporate Transparency California has two new laws aimed at increasing corporate accountability for carbon emissions and climate-related financial risks. The Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act (Senate Bill 253) and the Climate-Related Financial Risk Act (Senate Bill 261) set new standards for businesses operating in the state. 👉Bill 253 - Companies with annual revenues over $1 billion must publicly report their GhG emissions starting in 2026, the reports must be verified by third-party assurance. 👉Bill 261 - Businesses with revenues over $500 million, must publicly disclose their climate-related financial risks every two years, along with strategies to mitigate those risks. California continues to set precedents for other regions to follow. California is officially in the wastewater to tap water business. Weather forecasts consistently point to a drier California and water purification systems are now extremely effective. For the agricultural community this is a wonderful development. Cities will be the recipient of the recycled water leaving farmers to receive their fair share of reservoir flows while managing the sustainability of their wells. As noted in previous posts farmers are becoming proactive protecting their aquifers. This will be a big long term win for the water well equipment suppliers. Why it matters The climate crisis is driving longer and more extreme droughts, pushing our already overstretched water supplies to the brink. By 2040, California is projected to lose 10% of its traditional water supply — that’s more water than the state’s largest reservoir, Lake Shasta, can hold at capacity. Recycling more water for drinking is one way Southland cities are working to lessen reliance on imported water from reservoirs fed by the overstretched Colorado River and less reliable snowpack in the Sierra Nevada

💸🚫 Outrageous! Businesses are already burdened with cap and trade fees for environmental protection. Now, SB 1497 wants to pile on additional fees stifling economic growth. The legislature needs to understand that these extra costs will inevitably trickle down to consumers - adding to the already hefty gas prices from existing taxes and regulation fees. Over the weekend, Governor Newsom signed the Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act (formerly SB253 and SB261), making regulated corporate sustainability disclosure the law of the land in California. The CCDAA will impact thousands of companies in and out of California, mandating disclosure of scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions and climate-related financial risks. The CCDAA is aligned with the global trend of regulated sustainability reporting, evident in initiatives like the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). It’s an important step forward for the US: an effort to harmonize and improve the standards and rigor of climate reporting. The first companies to report under the CCDAA will do so beginning in 2026.
