A mentee paying it forward. Congrats Dyshawn! I was so happy to have Dyshawn Gales join me for volunteer teaching "Life Skills & Job Skills" to seniors in AP History at North Chicago Community High School. Dyshawn was in our 2014-2018 mentoring group and is one of the success stories. He got a PE degree from South Dakota State and along the way was a four year starter on the football team, won two FCS national championships, was an All-American his senior year and had a tryout with the Cleveland Browns, but was cut before this latest NFL season began. I met Dyshawn for lunch prior to going over to the school and discussed the next steps in his life. He wants to be a coach and athletic director someday and I connected him to the superintendent right away(i.e. Networking 101). The current athletic director is a fan of his (and was one of the mentors with me). The students, 75% wanting to go to a 4 year school, loved hearing his story, how he overcame setbacks, and they asked so many great questions of the challenges in going from high school to college. It's why we need young leaders like Dyshawn being brought in to districts, mentored and advanced to be the next gen of leaders at our schools. Dyshawn and I gave the students a wake up call on prepping for college based on the mentoring group experiences. 1. in our mentoring group 12 of the 18 started college, only 2 got a four year degree. (But, 13/18 are on the right track today). 2. Bad decisions have to be avoided. We had 2 kids shot the summer of graduation. Who you hang with can impact your life. Another is currently serving a 5 year term for attempted murder and gang violence. 3. 15 babies were born by the time they all turned 20--no marriages. 4. An interesting connection is that the two college grads did not have a kid out of wedlock. The sequence we discussed yesterday was: -learn something -get a job -get married - have kids When it gets out of sequence, generational poverty is likely to continue. These are really good kids in this senior class. The problem is they don't know they are NOT ready to compete in college against other 18 year olds. Dyshawn tried to warn them. Poorer performing schools are setting students up for failure. Graduate them and then let them struggle. Our poorer schools are passing kids, graduating them --with so little academic and life skills. The lowest score is a 50; 25% come in tardy daily; chronic absenteeism is accepted; they refuse to make kids shut off their cells phones because the kids protested. Two-thirds of the graduates last year flunked the admission test to get into the local community college. Since 2014 I've never met a student with great math or science skills. We need to blow up this whole education system. Totally dysfunctional and the teachers unions are part of the problem. Dyshawn is great--the system is not.

I'm in this photo somewhere, but so are dozens of i.c.stars |* Chicago's current and past program participants who are doing some amazing work as they step into tech careers and become leaders in their companies and join civic projects to give back to their neighborhoods. Next week, I'll be celebrating 2 years of working here and I can't believe how the time has flown and how the need for workplace development is needed now more than ever. Each 4-month training cycle has spots for 20 participants, but we receive over 300 applications from individuals looking for the opportunity to change their careers, build new skills, and invest in their future. Our participants are parents, siblings, children, gig workers, visionaries, and task masters. They may have a different backstory than me (and/or you), but as I learned 20 years ago when I started my professional journey as a social worker, we have much more in common with people than we do different and our backgrounds may inform our futures, but they definitely don't predict them. #TechTalent #FutureOfTech #IOpener #ICStars

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated observation of the ending of slavery in the United States. This holiday commemorates when more than 250,000 enslaved Black people received their freedom -- nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Today, Juneteenth is a celebration of the resilience and contributions of the Black community. We also reflect on the pivotal moments that have shaped our nation’s history and our ongoing journey toward equality.  As a company that is dedicated to health and well-being, we at Johnson & Johnson understand that true wellness includes equality, equity and justice for all. Respect Your Competition: A Lesson in Humility and Strategic Relationships In business, just like in sports, respect is everything—especially when it comes to competition. A powerful lesson in humility and respect can be drawn from the football game between Notre Dame and Northern Illinois (NIU) on September 7. Notre Dame, ranked 5th and a 28-point favorite, was expected to dominate, but NIU, an underdog from the Mid-American Conference, pulled off a stunning 16-14 upset. While this victory was monumental for NIU, the real lesson came from what NIU’s head coach, Thomas Hammock, shared afterward. Hammock reflected on his experience with Power Conference coaches, noting that many often disregard him before games, making him feel less than their equal. But Notre Dame’s head coach, Marcus Freeman, was different—he treated Hammock with respect and genuine engagement. This small but meaningful interaction led to an unexpected twist. After the game, when other coaches might call Hammock for insights into Notre Dame, Hammock refused, instead offering to help Freeman by sharing his own scouting insights to help Notre Dame improve. That mutual respect led to Notre Dame’s resounding victory over Purdue the following week. In business, respecting your competition—no matter how small—is a crucial principle. You never know when that underdog might win, but more importantly, you never know how building respectful relationships could open doors and opportunities in ways you don’t anticipate. Just as in football, in business, respect isn’t just about being nice—it’s about strategy, long-term thinking, and fostering the kind of relationships that lead to success, even when the competition is fierce.

Big news out of the Milwaukee 7 Region! Today, Eli Lilly and Company, a global leader in the pharmaceutical industry, announced a transformative $3 billion investment to expand its operations in southeastern Wisconsin. This new facility, located in Kenosha County, is expected to create 750 new jobs and further cement the region's reputation as a hub for medical tech and manufacturing. The project will be developed across from Lilly’s recently acquired Nexus Pharmaceuticals site, purchased in April. Nexus, another regional success story, relocated operations to southeastern Wisconsin in 2019 with support from Milwaukee 7, state, and local economic development partners. The state-of-the-art facility will bolster Lilly’s global parenteral (injectable) product manufacturing network, enabling the company to address the growing demand for its diabetes, obesity, and future pipeline medicines across various therapeutic areas. "Today's announcement represents our single largest U.S. manufacturing investment outside our home state of Indiana and will add to our ability to expand capacity to make both our existing and future pipeline of medicines right here in the Midwest," said Edgardo Hernandez, executive vice president and president of Lilly Manufacturing Operations. "We look forward to bringing high-wage, advanced manufacturing, engineering and science jobs to people in Wisconsin, a state that is becoming a critical geography in our global manufacturing operations." Saturday mornings used to start with a trip to True Value with my dad. It was the neighborhood hardware store in the Chicagoland area. Now that brand is going bankrupt and selling to Do it Best. 75 years of history couldn't save True Value. What business lessons can we learn from this latest retail exit? • Adapt or go the way of the dodo. Markets change, and you need to be flexible. • Diversify your revenue streams. True Value's housing market dependency was its Achilles' heel. • Prepare for a cash crunch. Financial planning isn't optional. A 75-year legacy couldn't withstand a crisis. • Economic trends can make or break you. Inflation will shave profits off the top line, and every business needs to factor critical economic indicators into its strategy. I learned a lot of these lessons the hard way at Lonerider Spirits. IT PAYS TO BE BIG. While many smaller colleges are on life support and facing oblivion, some large State Universities are seeing record attendance. This year's University of Illinois enrollment surpasses the previous record of 94,861 students set in 2022 across the system’s three campuses. The university’s three campuses in Chicago, Urbana-Champaign and Springfield have a combined 97,772 students signed up for classes this semester, according to a news release. The previous record of 94,862 students was set in 2022. Enrollment numbers are based on the 10th day of classes, the standard benchmark for colleges and universities across the country. Having served on the board of directors of The Chris Center whose mission is "to improve teen/pre-teen mental wellness in the Greater Indianapolis area through education and experiences with nature and the healing power of human-animal interactions", I was interested in reading this article on a growing trend in behavioral health. Did you know...........Private equity (PE) is all over healthcare, with investment firms owning more than 400 hospitals around the US. But as the country faces a mental health crisis—US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called it the “the defining public health crisis of our time”—PE has its sights set on one of the fastest-growing areas of the industry: behavioral health care. PE has accounted for over 60% of all behavioral health deal flow since 2018, and firms like Thurston Group and Five Points Capital now own about a quarter of facilities offering behavioral health care in some states, according to a recent cross-sectional study published in JAMA Psychiatry.
