Traveling in #Taiwan this week with fellow #DrPH students from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. We met with the leadership at the #TaiwanHealthInsuranceAdministration (THI) Taiwan Centers for Disease Control, and the #TaiwanHealthPromotionAdministration. Taiwan administers a single government run health insurance plan. They have a 92% country-wide satisfaction score. Healthcare is affordable, accessible, with low out of pocket maximums (no one is at risk of medical debt), the service offerings are very similar to the US, but with western and eastern medicine options as a standard. Over 72% of healthcare in Taiwan is provided by private hospitals and providers. With government provided grants for research and innovation. And each year the THI comes close to a balanced budget with minimal variation in premium increases. Is it perfect no, but there are factors that we can learn from to improve access, equity, and prevent anyone from experiencing anxiety when thinking about accessing care and the fear of medical debt in the US. Concerns about quality. We met with China Medical University China Medical University and the majority of their hospitals are Joint Commission acredditted.
