Working your way up in the Live Event Industry is like Training in the Gym. No one walks into the gym on day one and expects to be the best in the room. Training takes years of dedication, effort, trial and error, and correction to become your best.
Why would working in Live Events be any different? Here are a few lessons I've learned in the gym that I believe also apply to working in Live Events. Or are these lessons I have learned in Live Events that also apply in the Gym? Hmmmmm
I was recently doing some coaching in the gym when one of the longtime, dedicated students was having a tough day. Out of character for her, she apologized after class for her "horrible" work that day.
I told her she did great. She showed up when she wasn't feeling it, she didn't quit when she was fatigued, and she even did extra after class. That day was the day she grew. It's easy to do the things we want to do, but we grow when we do the things we don't want to do. Turned out after class that she had one of her highest calorie burns ever. She crushed it, she pushed herself and she is winning every day. The same lesson applies in Live Events. The day you may feel at your worst, may turn out to be your strongest.
1. If you keep showing up and putting in the work, you will grow and improve.
2. We grow and improve when our muscles are fatigued, it is the same with events and experience. Embrace the hardship and you will improve. Overcome.
3. Go in early, it's always the best time to get the work in.
4. The day you don't feel like it is EXACTLY the most important day to do it. You will grow 10 times more the day you don't feel like doing the work.
5. Yes, it is a grind, and it is physical, but even more than that, it is mental discipline that wins the day.
6. The leaders in the business of live events are the same as the leaders in the gym. Dedicated, tough, strong, and the best ones are positive and encouraging to everyone else.
7. You will only get what you work for, nothing more, nothing less. You can't mail it in. You can't fake it.
8. In Live Events, and the Gym, there is ALWAYS more to learn.
9. Be good to the newbies, they need help and encouragement. We need the next generation in both Live Events, and the Gym. Don't Haze them. They showed up, that's not easy for a lot of people.
10. The best leaders and coaches have probably learned a lot from their mistakes over the years. When you find a good one, be a good student. Be a sponge. Ask questions, keep listening. We only learn when our ears are open, not when our mouths are open.
11. Don't get caught up with the party, it will always set you back.
12. You win every day, by preparation, by planning, with effort. It starts all over again tomorrow.
I hope one thing here resonates with you. My best.
