  • Development of a remote pupillometer system for non-invasive, distant analysis

    IEEE

Pupillometry, the measurement of pupillary diameter, is used in a variety of applications. The pupil is directly connected and controlled by the central nervous system and subsequently certain pupillary actions and reactions cannot be consciously controlled. Accordingly, measurement of the pupillary diameter is a good tool to be used to conduct analysis of subject physiological and psychological condition based on known pupillary parameters. However, current pupillometer designs limit the use and applicability of many commercially available devices in specific applications. Some applications with current unmet needs require a non-obtrusive measurement to be taken over time. The goal of this design and fabrication was to create a device which accurately and unobtrusively accomplishes the task of pupillometry for use in these functions.

This project was completed as a capstone engineering design project known as the Major Qualifying Project. The goal of this project was to develop a remote system capable of obtaining measurements of pupillary diameter of a subject from a distance of two meters. The system was realized by acquiring images using various optical techniques. The image data is processed by a robust algorithm, and returns the current pupil diameter and percentage change. The system also has the ability to track…
