What can you learn from working for a start-up company?
Your company culture is who you hire, fire, and promote. Unfortunately in a start up the company can bend the rules typically found in Stanford professor Robert I. Sutton's book "The No A**hole Rule: Building a Civilized Workplace and Surviving One" People who are good at the work but not very nice are the “brilliant a**hole” archetype typically can survive in a start up until they stop providing value, which given the "keep the lights on" nature can be a very long time and ultimately poison the well. One bad apple can certainly spoil the whole bunch.

How can you handle resistance to changes in the sales compensation plan?
The hard truth about comp plans is you get a decision not a vote. You can either decide to accept the plan and work it to the best of your ability or you can decide to not accept it and have to ask yourself if fighting for change will make a positive impact in the end. Unpopular opinion for sure but comp plans are not a democracy. That being said if there is a valid argument against the plan then voice it but don’t expect change. Ask to be heard and then figure out the best way to work the plan…every good sales leader I have been lucky enough to work with has always said “there’s a hole in every plan just have to find the hole and double down on that area.”
