The bipartisan Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024 released by U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (I-WV) and John Barrasso (R-WY) takes a much needed step in accelerating the permitting process for critical energy projects in the U.S. As the legislation spornors's state (shared here), our outdated permitting system is stifling our ability to move clean energy projects forward, which in turn has adverse economic effects and inhibits our ability to reduce emissions. I'm glad to see these bipartisan efforts are moving toward fixing a broken permitting system that has shackled American energy production for far too long. #EnergyProduction #EnergyPermitting

If you haven't come across the excellent "Volts" podcast from david roberts, it's well worth a listen for the latest takes on energy policy and transitioning to a carbon-free economy. This episode on Distributed Energy Resources - or DERs - is particularly interesting at a time when energy demand is rising and project interconnection waits are getting longer: https://lnkd.in/eTBmtuV6 A few eye-opening points raised: ⬆ Peak load growth could be 12x what utilities previously estimated. ⚠ Existing generation sources have less capacity to handle this growth than expected and have lead times too long to scale up and meet demand. ⏱ In 2007, interconnection times to hook up to the grid stood at 1.7 years. In 2022, that time is closer to 5 years for traditional generation sources. ⚡ Transmission expansion is also decelerating at a time when hockey stick growth is required to meet 2050 net-zero targets. Funding News: LevelTen Energy secured approximately $65 million in Series D funding, led by B Capital and involving major investors like Google, Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund, and others. The LevelTen Platform, the world’s largest online hub for carbon-free energy transactions, has facilitated over $14.8 billion in clean energy deals. LevelTen Energy aims to accelerate the deployment of clean energy to address the climate crisis. “The clean energy industry’s growth has been astonishing, but the climate crisis demands that we deploy even more clean energy at a much faster rate. Rapidly growing electricity demand is straining our infrastructure and threatening to undermine climate goals. Kudos to Duane Highley and the team at Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, Inc. for seizing the benefits of the #InflationReductionAct to accelerate its transition to cleaner and lower cost #renewables. Power supply to its distribution coop members will hit 50% clean next year en route to a 89% reduction in #GHG emissions by 2030 ... with new resources additions focused on #windpower, #solarpower and #batterystorage with a small amount of #gas for peaker/reliability purposes. This is very much in line with the trajectory envisaged by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) #CleanPowerRules and shows that those rules do not force a "major" change in the industry, rather they run totally with the grain of what makes economic sense, and what is happening on the ground, while of course reducing harmful pollution at the same time. "Alphabet's Google, along with TPG Rise Climate and other investors, is backing clean energy developer Intersect Power as part more than $800 million funding round, the company said on Tuesday. Google's capital investment in Intersect Power comes as the tech giant, like other 'hyperscalers' including Microsoft and Meta, races to bolster its domestic data center capacity to meet the AI-driven surge in cloud demand. The company is also partnering with Intersect and TPG Rise Climate to develop industrial parks. These parks will house gigawatts of data center capacity co-located with new clean energy plants. They are uniquely positioned to integrate with renewable energy sources, specifically utilizing waste heat from a neighboring bioenergy plant. Despite recent setbacks in the vertical farming industry, such as AeroFarms' bankruptcy and increasing competition, this is an impressive raise. 💨 Again Bio, a Copenhagen, Denmark-based company utilizing biological processes to convert CO2 into valuable chemicals raised $43M in Series A funding from ACME Capital, Atlantic Labs, EIFO, GV (Google Ventures), HV Capital, and other investors. 💨 44.01, a London, UK-based company mineralizing CO2, raised $37M in Series A funding from Air Liquide Venture Capital, Alumni Ventures, Amazon Climate Pledge Fund, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and Climate Investment (CI). 44.01 combines CO2 with seawater or treated wastewater and injects it underground to react with peridotite. They are currently partnering with the Omani government for their pilot project. ⚡ Rhizome, a Washington D.C., DC-based grid resilience software platform, raised $1m in Seed funding from Convective Capital. Their platform uniquely quantifies the resilience value of various investment options, helping utilities gain a clear understanding of the cost-benefit analysis of different resilience strategies and build resilience models. Clean Energy Ventures (CEV) raised $305 million for its second fund, surpassing its $200 million target due to high demand from investors like The Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment and Carbon Equity. CEV is channelling funds into technologies beyond traditional solar and wind energy, targeting industrial decarbonization (e.g., emissions-reducing tech for cement and steel), efficient recycling and bioplastic production, and grid-improving technologies such as virtual power plants. “When you think about where do we need to have material impact, and where are sectors that technology really hasn’t changed for many, many decades, steel and cement rank at the top of the list.
