#MaintenanceMinute The problem with Common Sense I often hear people say, “But that is common sense!”, when referring to maintenance tasks. The problem however, is that common sense, is really not all that common. See, for me, Run To Failure is a usable maintenance strategy, yet I get so much resistance when I suggest it to plant personnel. For me, it makes sense. Common sense, is defined by some as follow: - sound and prudent judgment based on a simple perception of the situation or facts - the basic level of practical knowledge and judgment that we all need to help us live in a reasonable and safe way The problem is that ‘common sense’, by nature of its definition, assumes we all have the basic same education, experience and risk perception. For some it is common sense to use a seat belt, yet, others do not deem it necessary. That means our risk perception is different. So when we start implementing maintenance tasks and strategies, do we rely on common sense? We should not rely on common sense. We can reasonably argue that specifics of a tasks should be common knowledge, based on the fact that the person conducting the task will have a certain qualification (i.e. a trade) and even then, it is still questionable. #MaintenanceMinute : Improving Reliability How do you improve reliability of a complex system? Do you add more checks and balances, more instrumentation and controls, to ensure any potential failure is flagged and highlighted? Or do you rather change the complex system for a simple one. In the short term a simple system my come at a higher cost, but over time, this system will save a significant amount of money. From a first principle perspective, the reliability of a system is the product of each components’ reliability (if there is no redundancy, duty standby arrangement). So the more complex the system, the lower the reliability will be. Simplify the system, and you will increase the reliability. It also has the potential benefit that the skill level required for maintenance and change outs are lower. Simplification has many benefits! #maintenance #maintenancecoach

#MaintenanceMinute : Maintenance is easy, so why do you keep getting it wrong? Maintaining a single piece of equipment is easy. Most maintenance professionals will knock up a maintenance plan for a piece of equipment, and then maintain it fairly successfully. So if you can do it for one, why not for many? I reckon it is because we tend to over-complicate maintenance. Setting up elaborative processes, complicated procurement procedures and exhaustive, ineffective meetings! Then add to that some budget constraints and ‘simple’ just became very hard and complicated. You just need to go back to basics. Start by simplifying. Simplify your processes, meetings and your improvement strategy. Then stop finding excuses and start finding solutions. #findsolutions #noexcuses

#MaintenanceMinute : Reducing Consequence of Failures In today's industry, there are times where eliminating the root cause of the failure is not possible. This may be due to the root cause requiring a significant capital investment, or a delayed outage, or similar event that is not feasible in your current operation. What do you do then? Leave it. Keep highlighting it to management every time the failure occurs? No, that is when reducing the impact of the failure, should become the focus. Focus on eliminating the consequence of the failure or reducing the impact. If you keep doing it, you will see an improvement. One can spin themselves in circles trying to understand 100% rated breakers and the resulting branch conductor ampacities. I have tried to de-mystify it in the article linked below with four examples. TL;DR — A low-voltage circuit breaker is designed and tested to handle its entire current rating, yet according to NEC and CEC, continuous loads are restricted to 80% of the circuit breaker's rating (the protection must be not less than 125% of the load). Manufacturers conduct extra tests to provide circuit breakers rated at 100%, enabling compliance with the code exception clause. #MaintenanceMinute: Work Management Do you struggle to gain control over your work management process? Is there work being done that you don't have visibility over? Having clear measuring points in your process is key to ensure its effectiveness. Capturing ALL work through your CMMS and measuring it as part of your work management is crucial. If you have work conducted by a Contract or Project Controller, and their work is not measured in your Work Management, chances are a lot of this work will be out of control and you will have no visibility over it. Remember, all maintenance work must be measured if you want to be able to control it. #workmanagement #workordermanagement

#MaintenanceMinute : Reliability as a daily activity How do you do Reliability? Is it that elusive activities that gets done somewhere and no one actually knows what is happening? Or is Reliability part of your reliability team’s daily habits? How do you make reliability part of your daily habits? Simple, do something small everyday, with the aim of improving your plant reliability. Start by reviewing your daily breakdown notifications. Were the breakdown preventable? Is the maintenance strategy in place? Can the Work Instruction be improved? This should be a quick review. Then, look at your weekly paretos, and evaluate your top 3 items (either duration, frequency or cost). Ensure you put at least one effective action in place for every item. If you do this consistently, every day, every week, you will be amazed at the difference you can make. What other Reliability Habits does your team have? #habits #reliability

MTA is the identification of the steps, spares and materials, tools, support equipment, personnel skill levels as well as any facility issues that must be considered for a given repair task in a maintenance program This is super critical when you want to set up a maintenance program using the Reliability Centered Maintenance methodology... Can we team up here and define the seven basic steps that should be considered?
