I state this as my personal viewpoint, not that of my employer: At the core, freight brokers perform two rudimentary functions for shippers: 1. Transport goods from point A to point B. 2. Float cash for ~30 days (assuming a 45 day collection and paying out carriers in 15 days). The market-leading firm in freight payments is exceptionally well-managed, employs top talent in transportation and logistics, and operates at a best-in-class level. They have consistently delivered value to small and medium-sized asset and non-asset transportation firms, amassing a valuable repository of shipment data and intelligence. In doing so, they have captured over 50% of the carrier payment market. A few well funded venture capital-funded startups and large brokers/carriers with proprietary systems have maintained equilibrium, preventing monopolistic behavior. However, the largest freight broker’s decision to outsource half of its core functions could set a dangerous precedent. It may encourage other sponsor-held (private equity-owned) firms to seek short-term efficiencies by following suit. If this trend continues and as the dominant firm becomes more embedded in broker's/carrier's systems, the likely outcome will be a single firm gaining the power to leverage data for profit, influence, or even set sector-wide standards in cash flow management, and increase fees. From my experience working alongside our customers, the recent Forbes article by Edward Segal, CAE suggests solutions that will only inflate capital expenditures and workforce demands without addressing the root issues. Instead, forward-thinking companies are choosing smarter strategies to stay ahead: ✅ Implement workflows and tools to better manage and baseline the increasing number and diversity (e.g., geolocation) of suppliers. ✅ Leverage AI to enhance visibility, predict disruptions, and automate key supply chain decisions. ✅ Focus on inventory efficiency, turning stock faster instead of creating unnecessary bottlenecks with excessive stockpiles. Implementing strategic processes and tooling (like Leverage AI) can help organizations seamlessly execute on all three of these critical strategies—reducing costs, improving efficiency, and staying ahead of disruptions.
