This is a good and important read on #FOAK projects and the ClimateTech Valley of Death, with good insight from some very sharp investors. One often overlooks aspect of this challenge is WHO will build these early commercial projects that are smaller and don't often appeal to top tier EPCs. Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the Beanstalk AgTech Drought Venture Studio close this Friday July 12th. Since launching the venture studio the team have been engaging with researchers and AgriTech innovators, scouting for technologies that can be validated and commercialised. For those still considering the opportunity, here are a few details: - The Drought Venture Studio is specifically designed to support technology development and commercialisation at the earliest stage, including pre business incorporation. - Technologies can target drought resilience across a broad range of crop types and applications in the field and the back office. Examples include, water and soil management, pest and weed control, financial resilience and supply chain management systems. - Up to $250k in funding will be available for projects once validated, to support development as well as salary funding for co-founders in the early stages. - Need a co-founder? The venture studio will facilitate the process of bringing a co-founder or CEO into validated businesses. Prime Coalition has long taken a different tack to climate finance compared to its for-profit brethren. It makes the usual venture-style investments in startups through Azolla Ventures and also helps philanthropists direct their money to climate-related projects that it deems high impact. Yesterday, Governor Gavin Newsom gave a shoutout to BEAM Circular and the huge potential of the bioeconomy at the California Economic Summit hosted by California Forward. He highlighted the initiative's rapid progress and called out the bioeconomy as California’s next trillion-dollar industry. In a surreal moment, he referenced HawkTower’s 10-year venture commitment to this space. I participated in the rise of the app/smartphone economy in the 2010s ... this feels similar. 📲 Currently, ag by-products and the bioeconomy are turning leftover almond shells and rice straw into energy (biofuels) and converting crop residues into natural soil enhancers to grow healthier crops. Soon, we can expect biomanufacturing and bio-based innovation to produce everything from medicines to new proteins, and other high-value materials, like construction materials. We’re humbled and excited to be part of this journey. I learn something new and meet incredible, dedicated Californians every day. Portland Seed Fund managers announced the creation of the Intrepid Oregon Fund, backed by $4 million for early-stage startups in climate tech, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and more. Business Oregon and additional investors support the initiative, with Portland Seed Fund selected to manage investments through a competitive process led by the state agency and Oregon Innovation Council. The annual Thrive Global Impact Summit is one of my favorite AgTech events, and the 2024 Summit on November 6th and 7th did not disappoint. John Hartnett, Helen Hartnett and SVG Ventures | THRIVE team always do a fantastic job of bringing together key stakeholders throughout the food & agriculture ecosystem, especially farmers, to discuss real-world challenges and actionable solutions. The main strength of the Summit is the significant number of corporations on stage and in attendance, which is not surprising as SVG Ventures | THRIVE, the group organizing the event, has developed an incredible network of agriculture and food corporations, with whom it works closely to support the next generation of AgTech and FoodTech innovators. Corporations are essential to drive product adoption on the farm and likely key technology acquirors that will provide valuable exits for entrepreneurs and investors. Many of the corporate speakers provided valuable advice to entrepreneurs and start-up companies about the best ways to approach established corporates to develop joint ventures, strategic partnerships and other relationships that can be mutually beneficial, especially helping with product distribution and market traction, often the major challenges faced by start-ups. As most AgTech and FoodTech exits will be through M&A transactions rather than IPOs, start-up companies should not wait too long to establish relationships with corporates.      I participated on the “Value Chain Transformation” panel, moderated by Danny O'Brien, SVG Ventures | THRIVE, along with panelists Bryon McGregor, Alto Ingredients, Inc.; Lisa Kissick, UFA; and Trevor Mecham, Valmont Industries, Inc.; where we explored the profound impact of digital transformation across every stage of the value chain. Agriculture is at the crux of both risk from and remediation for anthropogenic climate change. There's nothing more scalable than leveraging what nature does best to mitigate climate change. Applied Carbon is a win-win: great for the farm, great for permanently fixing carbon and keeping it out of the atmosphere, and even good at restoring spent land.
