🔬 Sara Weissman reports: Next year, Howard University is expected to gain Research-1 status, the coveted Carnegie Foundation classification for doctoral universities with very high research activity. #HBCU leaders and experts say Howard’s ascendance would be a win for the entire sector as more historically Black institutions strive to make it into the upper echelons of research. Currently 10 other #HBCUs have R-2 status, connoting high research activity; a couple are already hot on Howard’s heels, falling just shy of meeting the criteria for next year. There’s been “healthy competition” among HBCU presidents seeking R-1 status, including jokes back and forth over who would make it to the top, but it’s “all in fun,” said Bruce Jones, senior vice president for research at Howard. Jones wants to see other HBCUs follow; he’s currently preparing a presentation about how Howard achieved R-1 status for a handful of HBCUs that have asked for guidance. Mushtaq Gunja, executive director of the Carnegie classification systems, believes more HBCUs are likely to show up on the R-1 list in the next round of classifications, which are published every three years. Most HBCUs with R-2 status aren’t ready to make the jump to R-1, even under the new criteria. But there are some notable exceptions, said Jaret C. Riddick, PhD, senior fellow at Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET), who studies HBCUs’ pursuit of R-1 status. This past year, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University spent $102 million on research and development and conferred 68 doctorates—just two short of the R-1 requirement, said Melissa Hodge-Penn, interim research vice chancellor at North Carolina A&T. But Ph.D. conferrals went up over the summer and are expected to continue growing since the land-grant university added new programs, including a nursing doctorate. Morgan State University president David K. Wilson said the university conferred an average of 66 Ph.D.s per year over the last three years, only four under the R-1 minimum. Research expenditures fell a mere $6 million short. Wilson projects Morgan will exceed the R-1 research spending specification by at least $20 million and hit, if not surpass, its Ph.D. conferral requirement come next cycle. Dear Christian school and university leader, What message does it send to students when the majority of the people serving food or cleaning the campus are black, but there are hardly any black teachers or leaders? What message does it send when the only black teachers are the football and basketball coaches? I know it's hard to find minorities willing to work in Christian schools and universities, for a whole host of reasons. But there are ways to increase black applicants.* 1) Develop relationships with black churches in the area. Meet their pastors. Take them to lunch or coffee. Build trust. Identify ways to serve these churches. Then, when you have an opening, you can call these Christian leaders and they can announce the job, post the job, and inform their networks. 2) Host a job fair at your school or university. In hosting the job fair, you can partner with other schools or universities in the area, but be sure to recruit minorities to attend. Which leads me to... 3) Recruit from HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). There are Christian graduates who may be interested in openly expressing their faith while fulfilling their vocational interests. HBCUs are also producing strong graduates in the STEM fields. 4) Form a parent group comprised of parents who are interested in diversity and unity. You will have parents from all different races and backgrounds who want to participate. Even if the group is small, their network will be vast. By using this strategy I was once introduced to at least five black qualified candidates for an open middle-school principal position. 5) Pray that God will send you those kingdom minded black people who share your biblical values. Prayer works. 6) Ensure that you address possible impediments to minority flourishing that may deter black candidates or lead to low retention. This is not about simply hiring black people regardless of their qualifications. This is about contesting the narrative that says there are no qualified black leaders and teachers who love Jesus who can contribute to your school. This is about breaking down the walls of segregation that still exist in our communities. This is about being hospitable to the stranger and welcoming him or her in. This is about me. I've been working at predominantly white schools and universities for the past eight years because leaders saw the value in intentionally bringing my cultural perspective and background to their institutions. There are other men and women who God wants to use to bring light, love, and leadership to your school. Trust Him, and start taking the steps today! *These lessons also work for minorities of any ethnic background.

The SECU Public Fellows Internship Program at ECU bridges the university and regional communities by addressing community-identified priorities. This program offers fellows the chance to cultivate leadership, analytical, problem-solving, communication, and project management skills and expand their professional network. Application Process & Requirements: Each year, the program selects up to 20 students for the SECU Public Fellow Internships. These internships provide a 330-hour PFI experience along with 20 hours of leadership and professional development workshops. Additionally, selected students receive a stipend of up to $4,600. Participants are expected to attend orientation and workshops throughout and after their internship. They must present at a State Employees Credit Union Advisory Board meeting in the summer or fall.
