#happyfriday had a great time up in the twin cities at the Be the Change TPAC conference. Also, had a chance to snap a picture with other #FMMA leaders. There were a TON of great speakers. 🤓What did I learn? We have so many amazing strategies to reduce employers claims whether it’s at the #hospital, #surgeries, #pharmacy. 🤓But what do we really need? We need healthier Americans. There are several factors on why our we are experiencing an #obesity epidemic (not going there). 🤓What’s one solution that will move the needle? Having great direct primary care (DPC) partners. It makes healthcare accessible and affordable for employees and their families. Some things are best left to the professionals. That is a lesson my three-year-old learned recently. After trimming my sideburns and around my ears before work last week I left my trimmers on the counter. That is where our youngest found them when he went into our room to find my wife first thing after waking up. 👴 My wife was already wake and getting Three’s older siblings ready for school, so he decided to give the barbering profession the good old college try. By the time my wife found Three he was trying to comb his hair over so he could pretend that nothing happened. 🤣 My three-year-old is good at a few things, including counting to ten in mostly the correct order and knowing all the sounds that the animals at our ranch make. 🐷 🐔 🐮 He is not good at cutting hair. Your brother-in-law or Susan from your ward/congregation or many other acquaintances of yours can sell business insurance to you and on top of it can bundle your home, auto, life, health, and dental insurance. However, homes are not businesses and using a jack-of-all-trades can land you in some hot water, and with insurance, you usually don’t know until it is too late. Make sure your broker is a professional with experience with your industry's risk. It is common and reasonable for brokers to have 2-3 niche practices (Construction, foods, cyber, etc.). Make sure that the commercial insurance broker you are working with has expertise in your field.

This story is from Illinois. They are trying to remove Step Therapy which is a common complaint of consumers. In simple terms Illinois new law means the insurance company can't force you to try less expensive options before covering treatment your Dr. thinks you should do. I can argue both sides. On the one hand if your trusted Dr. is saying you need to do treatment A then that seems reasonable. On the other hand when the insurance company says treatments B, C, and D show equal effectiveness at a lower total cost... that helps keep premiums down for everyone. Bottom-line is I imagine a lot of states are going to watch and see what happens in Illinois over the next few years. If this law does not cause the cost of medical care and the cost of medical insurance to rise dramatically other states may follow. I don't just sell Employee Benefits, I teach Employee Benefits. I tell my students the great part about our industry is legislation causes it to constantly change. New agents that stay current can compete with tenured agents that don't service "smaller accounts". Ooops.... I did it again. I hit my max accrual on PTO... At Allianz, we accrue our PTO time with each pay period and then, when you hit your max, it stops. It's brilliant because it forces a person to continuously take the time off to rest, relax, do what recharges them. That is, if they take it! My team knows this happens to me and we make it an "unofficial goal" to take specific blocks of time off-- in 2024 we all agreed to take one full week out of the office, two separate times. And we hit it by July (go team!). But then what happened? Work...work happened. And meetings, and trainings, and new employees to onboard, and required training season, and school, and...here we are back at the max. How often are you paying attention to this in your teams? How much time do you put into planning the time off that you, and your team members, are going to take? How many more Decembers do we have to look at each other and say "we can't all be off at the same time"? Consider making this a regular discussion- perhaps in your next one on one meeting with your team, or your manager, check in on PTO time. Look at your calendars and help each other out. It's a gift that literally keeps on giving!

I shared these thoughts with a team I am beginning to work closely with. The structure of our conversations have been very motivating for me so I thought I'd share with my broader network. Basketball has always been my church. It's where I am most comfortable. This is directly due to the 10,000 hours I've put in. What I have learned about my professional role and leading, by playing men's league basketball for the first time: 🏀 Get everyone involved early. Doing so helps everyone identify how they can impact the game in their role when it counts. 🏆 It’s ok to miss good shots – a good shot missed in rhythm doesn’t negatively impact the final score- 45% efficiency is better than never playing 🧠 Thinking gets you into trouble, play free. 🔌 People around you will hustle more, if they are fed buckets that are easy and gets them involved. 🤺 Playing team defense is pivotal, especially as you grow older. 🔤 There is always 3-5 minutes In any game that is pivotal. You need to have a closer that is comfortable with the ball in their hands when winning time comes. 💯 I can close a basketball game and I like the pressure. 💪 You are refed differently if you are bigger and stronger than your competitor. Must play through contact and not take bunnies for granted. 🌧 Shooter’s shoot ❤️ What you love, is what you should do as much as possible.

Now anyone who knows me, I’m a Buckeye…but I can’t help but have respect for that team up north and the lessons that some of it’s historic coaches have contributed. Today, I want to talk about ‘The Team’. In today’s fast-paced multi tasking landscape, effective communication stands as the cornerstone of success. It reminds me of the legendary speech given by University of Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler: “The Team, The Team, The Team.” His words resonate beyond the field, emphasizing the unparalleled power of unity and collective effort. Schembechler’s message was clear – no individual is greater than the team. This philosophy is directly applicable to the workplace. When we prioritize “we” over “me,” we foster an environment where collaboration thrives. Clear, consistent, and inclusive communication is vital to achieving this. Here are three lessons from Schembechler’s speech that can transform our professional communication: 1. Unified Vision: Just as a football team rallies around a common goal, our organizations must communicate a clear, unified vision. This alignment ensures that everyone is working towards the same objective, enhancing efficiency and morale. 2. Mutual Respect: Schembechler emphasized respect and trust among teammates.
